Music appreciation is subjective. There is no "Closed-mindedness" about it. There is no political affiliation attached to it.
The "music" was written by Marvin Gaye and performed by Marvin Gaye. What he is doing over top of it is not music.
A rap artist might BE a great musician, but their rapping is not evidence of it.
Just because there is BAD music out there doesn't make rapping 'music."
This is not about musical taste. This is about basic logic. Your insistence that rapping is not music is illogical. You ignored the questions I asked you because you have no definition for what music is and your judgment that rap does not qualify is arbitrary and clearly meant to be an insult. I'll ask again, is Foxey Lady by Jimi Hendrix music? Because I call that rhythmic shouting, not singing.
What about this song by Anderson Paak (very bad language warning!):
Watch Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals play "Come Down", "Heart Don't Stand A Chance", "Put Me Thru" and "Suede" at the Tiny Desk.Did you know you can wat...
Would you also refuse to call this music? Mostly he raps, but he also occasionally wanders into melody. Does it suddenly become music in those instances? Is it all music because he is also playing an instrument? Or do percussions not count as musicians because their instruments don't make notes?
When you can't figure out kids listen to you music and you still use the F and N words that sends the music you have no class or common sense, ok man?
Now think just a litttle bit here, who is that song suppose to reach is sure isn't me that song is for for kids you don't see that? Well, most are way beyond that kind of crap, ok guy?
It doesn't bode well for your argument if you immediately resort to "but think about the children!"
The greatest art is usually not "G" rated. The human experience is more complex than that. Was Goodfellas a bad movie because the dialogue contained a bunch of F bombs? Was Mark Twain a crap writer because he used the N word? Was Michelangelo a failure because he painted a bunch of d*cks and t*ts? Stop being a prude.
Again, it's not just dumb kids who like Kendrick Lamar. John Mayer, for example, is a huge fan and I think he might have just a little more credibility than you do when it comes to knowledge of quality blues music. (Unless BB King and Eric Clapton have also praised your mastery of blues guitar?)
See, you came into this thread adamant that anyone who likes Kendrick Lamar must have never heard real music. But the truth is that YOU'RE the stunted one. You're stuck in the past. Lots of great music in the past, no doubt, but it didn't stop being made in 1989 or whenever you decided to tune out. You've closed yourself off to a lot of great tunes for no good reason and now your palate can't handle it when you encounter them. It's a shame, really.
Idk if you perceive hip hop to only be be either old 80's hip hip or commercial radio hip hop of "lil [insert name]," then you're missing on a lot of great artistry and music. Take a listen to this song, read the lyrics, hear the production, and tell me what you think. Maybe you just don't understand the references, slang, or musicality of hip hop to appreciate it?
I listened to it. Not a fan.
Glad you at least listened to it. Still think you're dead wrong about rapping, hip hop, and Kendrick Lamar. The fact you don't define what music is to you, but then say hip hop isn't music is telling. Some of ya'll are sounding like Ben "in my view, and in the view of my music theorist father who went to music school, hip hop isn't music" Shapiro. Some of you are stuck in the 20th century.

Flagpole and others won't address this. This is the best Tiny Desk performance and is Anderson Paak was sensational in this. I come back to this video once every few months.

Dude, when you have heard it all. talking old blues and jazz. Big Band, Bluegras, Doowop. Country, Rock & Roll, Soul, Funk, Metal. Punk, do you really think a cat who has to go the N and F route and guns and kids will make a dent? All that hip hop stuff simply can't compare and it really is just that simply.
Now if some kid who has never heard Bessie Smith, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Jimmie Rodgers, Woody Guthrie, Leadbelly, Howlin' Wolf, Sinatra, Ray Charles, Billie Holliday isn't going to know music, so that stuff will work out of ignorance.

why do you and pig man try to make everything political. Ben Shapiro and Trump have nothing to do with this. The fact remains that putting weak lyrics over a stolen beat isn’t music.

Yes, rapping is not music. ANYTHING you do that is NOT musical is not music. Music MUST include one of the 12 unique notes or combination of them into chords or power chords. So, do I consider drummers to be "musicians?" No. They are percussionists who support musicians.
The dude you linked here IS doing some singing, but the Kendrick Lamar clip in the initial post has no singing. He is rapping (no musicality) over music that he didn't write or perform.
Rapping is an art form. It is not music.
Also, to someone else's comment, I know full well the influence Kendrick Lamar has had on young people AND musicians...that doesn't make his rapping, music. Rap is not music.
Exactly. The midwits claiming that rappers/hip hop artists have no talents are the same who claim that TikTok and YouTube celebrities have no talent. Low comprehension and terrified of change.

I still stick by what I said. All those other genres are great in their own way. However, none of them hold a candle to the lyrical complexities, storytelling, etc. that hip hop can offer. Does hip hop offer what I mentioned all of the time? No, of course not. But at its peak, such as artists like Kendrick Lamar, there really is nothing in country, blues, etc. that can compete. You might like the sound or the style of the other genres more, doesn't deny that hip hop is superior to them in the categories I mentioned.

Political? I can't speak for Pig Man, but you described your dislike for Kendrick Lamar by saying "Kendrick 'imma rap about the ghetto' Lamar." I think we addressed this as tone death and you switched up your words - cool. I injected Shapiro bc you guys literally sound like him when it comes to describing hip hop as not music. It was a completely relevant and appropriate comparison. Nuance, try it some time.

Ok, I won't beat an old, probably dead inside horse any longer. Nothing anyone will say will convince you that hip hop is music. That's unfortunate for you. Luckily, you're in the extreme minority in the world, so it all works out.
thank you Sitting in the studio thinking about which mood would go Right now, freestyle or write down, whatever It still'll come up clever I just need to free my thoughts, and Lord knows that I know better But I ain't perfect, I ain't seen too many churches Or know them testament verses You should either hear me now or go deaf Or end up dead, die trying and know death Might end up dead, swallow blood, swallow my breath XXX a funeral, just make sure you pay my music respect NNN I mean that from the bottom of my heart You see my art, is all I have And victory tastes sweet, even when the enemy can throw salt Still knock them out the park like a XXX tow car Let bygones be bygones, but where I'm from We buy guns and more guns, to give to the young I'm living the life of a NNN trapped NNN Inside the system all you envision is trap NNN
Come on, that is total garbage.
Read these lyrics. Do they do nothing for you? Do they not make you reflect and feel? The storytelling in this song alone is already leagues above most other songs in other genres can produce. If you don't think so, then post what you got.
Keisha's Song - Kendrick Lamar
Fancy girls on Long Beach Boulevard Flagging down all of these flashy cars
And Lord knows she's beautiful Lord knows the usuals, leaving her body sore She take the little change she make to fix her nail cuticles Lipstick is suitable to make you fiend for more She play Mr. Shakur, that's her favorite rapper Bumping "Brenda's Got a Baby" while a pervert yelling at her And she capture features of a woman, but only 17 The 7 cars start honking, she start running like Flo-Jo Don't care if they Joe Blow If they got money to blow a bl0w job is a sure go And sure enough don't see a dime of dirty dollars Just give it all to her daddy but she don't know her father, that's ironic See a block away from Lueders Park, I seen the El Camino parked And in her heart she hate it there, but in her mind she made it where Nothing really matters, so she hit the back seat Rosa Parks never a factor when she making ends meet
Fancy girls on Long Beach Boulevard Flagging down all of these flashy cars
And Lord knows she's beautiful Lord knows the usuals, leaving a body sore Her anatomy is God's temple And it's quite simple, her castle is 'bout to be destroyed She's always paranoid, watching the law inside the streets Undercovers the dummies that look like decoys Remember the sergeant let her slide, said if he seen What's between her thighs he'd compromise, to no surprise She took the ultimatum 'round the alleyway and gave him A warm welcome that filled him right below the navel Though he was wired up like a pair of jumping cables His eyes was closed shut, prior charges, he had waived 'em It was a block away from Lueders Park, I seen a squad car parked And in her heart, she hate it there but in her mind, she made it where Nothing really matters, so she hit the back seat Cause Rosa Parks never a factor when she topping off police
Fancy girls on Long Beach Boulevard Flagging down all of these flashy cars
And Lord knows she's beautiful Lord knows the usuals, leaving a body sore As she bust down like a 12 bunk on tour She suddenly realized, she'll never escape the allure Of a black man, white man, needing satisfaction At first, it became a practice, but now she's numb to it Sometimes she wonder if she can do it like nuns do it But she never heard of Catholic religion or sinners' redemption That sounds foolish, and you can blame it on her mother For letting her boyfriend slide candy under her cover Ten months before she was ten he moved in and that's when he touched her This mothafvcka is the fvcking reason why Keisha rushing through that Block away from Lueders Park, I seen the El Camino park And in her heart she hate it there but in her mind, she made it where Nothing really matters, still she hit the back seat And caught a knife inside the bladder, left for dead, raped in the street Keisha's song
My little sister eleven, I looked her right in the face The day that I wrote this song, set her down and pressed play

It certainly wasn’t tone deaf. I’ll double down and say it again: Kendrick is a wannabe thug who can only rap about his “culture.” Nothing we said was political until you and pig man tried.
and you can keep repeating the tired lie about hip hop having the deepest lyrics but no one is buying it.

I've seen enough of your posts to know that your opinion on rap is undoubtedly related to your feelings about the black community in general. And this post proves it. "Wannabe thug"? The song is explicitly anti-violence and anti-gang culture, among other things. But he's black and he said bad words so he must be a thug.
You also accused him of "stealing" from Gaye. As if the entire history of music isn't based on people stealing beats, chord progressions, and melodies from people who came before. There are infinite examples of songs that are almost exact copies of other songs, just played in a different key or at a different tempo. Marvin Gaye, in particular, has been ripped off over and over. Blurred Lines? Thinking Out Loud? Sampling a song is no different. The bass is bigger and the energy of the song is totally different. He made it his own. It is obviously music.
