Best Efforts was reissued in 2008 by Daybreak Press. Those third edition printings should be more affordable if you just want a readable copy.
Who avoided Vietnam??!!! Maybe you should check your facts... Kenny enlisted as did Bill Norris...There was no attempt to avoid Vietnam, but the Army selected some enisted track athletes and allowed them a chance to train for the Olympics. Bill and Kenny knew this at the time ( as did I). Bill and Kenny served their country wearing a USA singlet. You suggest they " avoided Vietnam" but consider the nature of these two men (See "Best Efforts" page 94)... Many of us were not capable of taking anothers life and wanted to demonstrate to the world the true nature of being a US Citizen...Many of us saw Vietnam for what what it was. Kenny Moore was a decent, peaceful, loving person. He was a blue collar guy with a passion for distance running. The Army gave him a chance to continue with his training and with his dedication, hard work and good fortune, he succeeded and we all discovered the beautiful conscientious thoughtful person that he was. Please don't taint the memory of this sweet man by suggesting Kenny avoided anything in life. He was a good man that saw an opportunity to do good and he did it. His life has uplifted all of us. ....

Did he serve in Vietnam? Nope. He avoided it. And hence is life expectancy wasn't dropped by the years that the people who served there.
