Not sure if this is true, maybe its bs, but doesnt the chinese government make it really hard to move wealth out of china and dont they also like throw your whole family in the gulag if one person acts out of line?
Again, not sure if true but these are reasons ive heard for why people who have "made it" in life still choose to be loyal to china. Supposedly the chinese government thugs can take it all away from them no matter how rich or affluent they are, and athletes and actors are no exception.

Tucker absolutely lit her up tonight. He stopped short of calling her a traitor, but called her ungrateful, unpatriotic, and suggested she'll regret her deal with the devil down the road. She will.
Well, Tucker’s a jerk, but it speaks to my wider point. What Gu has done is a BIG deal, both in this country and in China. She may have done this for pure and noble reasons, but she’s going to become a symbol of a larger geopolitical divide. She will be both a villain and a hero for the choice. She’s going to lose her own narrative and it’s going to be hijacked. Whatever Tucker is saying is being mirrored by similar fervor in China. She is likely to become the story of the Olympics. I’m not agreeing or disagreeing with our friend Greg about the merits of his arguments that much of the anti China rhetoric is inflated or misguided, but he’s totally off base if he insists this is a minor personal choice of no importance. He might like it to be that way, and maybe it should be, but it’s not. That’s going to be very clear.
Dude she does tricks on skiis and has a nice set up thick DSLs. Nobody knows nor cares about who she is... nobody.

Which T&F stars do people care about more? Aren’t we all fans of an obscure niche sport that nobody cares about? When was the last time a T&F star got roasted on Fox News? For the next two weeks or so, she’s going to be a big story. In China she’s like the #1 sports celebrity right now. So too a big chunk of the world population she’s definitely big news.
https://youtu.be/ZjeiQ4ZcY8YI have never been a fan of athletes who were born, raised, educated and trained in one country, then competing for another country. In this particular case, my issue is with the parents even though the parents will say it was the kid's choice. This young athlete will learn soon learn representing China also means being controlled by the CCP. If she continues to live in the U.S., if she makes even the slightest statement counter to the CCP, she will immediately be ostracized.

I think she naively thinks she can pull it off. I really wonder if she struck a secret deal with the Chinese that allows her to retain her US passport. She is going to be attending Stanford and if she plans to continue in the sport beyond this Olympics, she’ll need to live in train primarily in the USA.
For those who think nobody cares about this story, here is another high level media publication about her in the last couple of days, and the attention to her in the USA pales to what she is garnering in China.
https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/03/sports/olympics/eileen-gu-china-freeski.htmlAmen. Look at these old Americans seethe behind their keyboards while this talented girl is out there living her best life. It's truly a pleasure watching these people's blood pressure rise in real time.

The seething Americans are met in equal measure by exulting Chinese. Gu may be living her best life, but don’t claim this is a minor decision that nobody cares about.

Um....ever heard of Shelby Houlihan?
I agree, Wise Old Man, I can see how this decision is tempting in the short-term but she may come to regret it in the long term.
I don't care one way or the other.

She represented China prior to Covid, chucklehead.
So?
While our country has suffered for two years through millions of cases and nearly a million deaths, China claims only 106,000 cases and 4600 dead. It's incredibly insulting for an American to willingly represent a country that lied about the virus, the severity, when it became apparent, violates civil rights at every turn...etc. I really hope she renounces her citizenship and stays there. Enjoy.
The U.S. could have a similar or better record by taking stronger steps as well. The U.S. wouldn't even have to have taken as strong steps as China. Look at Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, New Zealand, and Australia, or even Norway, all with a record on COVID light years better than the United States.

I doubt many Americans are seething, I would guess over 90% of Americans have never heard this athlete's name. However it is a story worth knowing about when a highly successful American renounces their citizenship and takes up citizenship in a 'communist country', yet still intends to live in America. I doubt this kid understands the serious ramifications of her actions. From this point on, the CCP will control who she speaks to and what she says and all of the money her family received will not easily be taken out of China. If she dose not toe the line, she can be jailed or sent to a re education camp. From an athletic standpoint why would anyone represent a country that has played no role in your development and does even have a culture of doing your sport.
I am pretty certain in time she will regret this decision.

From the linked article:
"Gu, who was born and raised in San Francisco and did most of her ski training near Lake Tahoe..."
"I'm not seething! Americans aren't seething! Now excuse me as I've been triggered to blurt out a parroted political, Orientalist spiel that totally isn't the product of superficial knowledge on why she made the wrong choice."
It's almost comedic at this point. Carry on.

Why does anyone represent any country? Lottery of birth? Resources? Current residence?

Only a fool see's no difference between Communist China and the free'ist, most prosperous country on Earth...
Notice how the liberals have no loyalty to their country? That's why they are so despised...

It's very true. My wife was born in Beijing and her family still lives there. She's been in the US since Tianenmen Sq thing when she was allowed to stay (student at the time). When her parents both had finally passed a few years ago she was left with about $20K in inheritance. Well, guess what? That money can't be taken out of China except in very specific circumstances. What we did was 'give' it to her sister who then took on some risk and sent the money to us over a few years in smaller amounts. It wasn't easy. She now has a cousin who's husband has been doing business in China and has over 1million over there. He's retiring and will not be going back to China but they have no idea how they will be able to get their money. Why didn't he worry about this sooner? Don't know but ... don't ever invest any money in China.
BTW, my wife's family name is 'Gu', just like this Eileen Gu. Maybe they're related?!
