You've got to be kidding me. So someone running down the finish straight with no one within 10m of he or she should be dq'd if they decide to run across the track?
The rules do not say you can be dq'd for failing to run a straight line. The rules say you can be dq'd for impeding another runner. Chelimo did not impede Fisher or Kincaid because they did not get close enough for him to do so.
Yes, the USATF rules state you must take a “direct line”. I still don’t think he should have been disqualified, just that he legitimately *could* have.
Rule 163 (3): a competitor must run in a direct line after entering the final straightaway of any race with two or more turns unless there is another runner in his or her path.

No one seems to be pointing out the obvious, which is that Chelimo had to run more distance too.
Exactly. It's pretty obvious the distance between Chelimo, Fisher, and Kincaid at the finish would have been the same if Chelimo had finished in lane 1.
They did give up about 6.7 cm to Teare, who ran in a straight line though.
48"x3 lanes out is 3.66 meters. Over 100 meters straight line, the extra distance is only 100-sqr(3.66^2+100^2)=100.067-100= 0.067 m
I just talked to Kincaid. He's got zero problem with Chelimo finishing in lane 4 and said he shouldn't be DQd.

Quick Take: Woody Kincaid had the best lap lap despite running a lot of extra ground
Kincaid’s last lap of 52.75 was the best the field but he was third as he was too far back at the bell (6th). After the race, Kincaid said starting with 3 laps remaing he knew he was in a box and wanted to get on the outside but never could do it and he credited Cooper Teare for keeping him boxed in.
He said at one point on the last lap, he thought about cutting inside but was afraid he’d take out his teammate Grant Fisher so he played it stay and ran even wider.
As for the early part of the race, he said at one point he thought Chelimo and Emmanuel Bor (whom Kincaid repeatedly called Hillary Bor) wanted to alternate laps and push the pace and he was game to try to help them out. But when he got up up front with them, he said he realized his legs didn’t feel great.
As for the lane 4 finish. Kincaid said he had no problem with how Paul Chelimo ran and didn’t think he should be DQd.
As for what’s next, he saidhe and Grant are both planning on doing the 10k/5k in the Olympics and there is rumor the BTC will head to Hawaii before the Games. He said he’ll just follow Jerry Schumacher’s orders but the goal is to medal.
Sounds like USATF isn’t concerned
Remember this race? Watch Rowbury as she first drifts inside to cut off Huddle and then keeps drifting to the outside to try and cut her off again. There was no DQ. Skip to around 14:40 to view.

God, you guys are babies. He was toying with those guys. If he's DQd, I'm not going to watch another track race all year after the mens 1500.
Was it bush league and a dick move? Yes.
But how is it different than what we see in every single race? In vritually every single distance race the winner wins in lane 2. Technically they should say in lane 1 and they are never DQd. How is this any different? The person behind you - and lets be real Fisher and Woody weren't in his league today - runs a little bit extra.
Stop whining.
Chelimo is world class. Fisher and Kincaid are national class. Maybe they will amke the jump but they havent yet.
This is the correct take here.
He didn't keep anyone from the team who made it. They were the clear top 3. The guys he cut in on said it was the correct mood themselves. Get over it.

Lol why would Kincaid care? He just qualified for the Olympics in two events. Come on Rojo you’re better off not saying anything than using comments from Woody here to justify.

Good for Woody

Some people on LRC would sooner see half the field DQ’d in every distance race than suck up and accept that there’s a physical dimension to the sport.
If you don’t want positioning, make everyone run in lanes. We could be the softest sportsmen on Earth!
So you believe that it would be OK for him to have forced them to run into the stands? Fisher had nowhere to go except further out. The only way he could have got inside was if he slowed down. If he maintains his line, they trip. That is clearly impeding.
If there was room for chelimo to move in front without Grant having to move or slow down, that would be different. But Grant was beside Paul and they would have tripped if Grant didn't move.
Neither Fisher nor Kincaid was beside Chelimo. They were always behind him.
Some people think making the team is all that matters when Chelimonsaid this win means everything. Chelimo also go $4k more than Woody and most likely another $25k from Nike.

So...when it comes to a dq in this case....who's supposed to care? Cooper Teare who was given the clearest possible path to the finish line and couldn't catch the 3 guys in front of him?
The one who's better off not saying anything is you.
For some reason, Chelimo moving to his right and covering more distance is considered a dirty, cheating trick but Fisher moving to his left and covering less distance is considered an impossible feat that would doom his chances.
Of course, Fisher could have gotten in front 100m earlier and none of this would be an issue.

Fisher was beside Chelimo. His body was right Beside Chelimo's legs. Chelimo never fully clears Grant until about the last 30m or so. For most of the straightaway Grant is right beside Chelimo's back kick.

Fisher could not have moved left because he would have had to go through Chelimo's legs to do it. The only way he could have would be to have slowed down and let Chelimo get in front of him.

Chelimo was in front of him.

A thoroughly unlikeable guy.
I agree. Complete whack job. I don't think a DQ is appropriate here though.

There is no DQ case here you clown. I’m just saying using Woodys comments is a weak argument. Why would he make a fuss over it when he’s going to Tokyo?
This should have been a clear DQ. Not even a question, he impeded 2 runners. The same rule that would apply if you purposely trip a runner would apply here.
