Not really. Just needs to be prepared to drop the pace with like 1k to go. Go run like a 235 last 1k and you will not be worried about getting out kicked.

Nico did run his last 1K in about 2:35.
Remember the great miler Filbert Bayi? He didn't need any pacers, his attitude was if you are going to beat me you are going to have to hurt. He took out every race by the scruff of the neck and said let's see what you got, not who has the best kick. Nico was just taught a lesson .Great talent but bad strategy.

Nico Young reminds me of Ritz. Same body type. He may one day improve the engine to run sub 13 like Ritz but the strength/speed to finish a race in 51/52 seconds probably wont be there. I am rooting for this young man
or maybe after his first year of college and college running - he is just beat. Cole Sprout and a bunch of other big name frosh distance people also looked like they had enough this year.

I would have had Grijalva and Young alternate laps in sub 13:40 pace. Chris Derrick was a guy who ran 13:08 right after college but never improved, due to injuries, and never developed a kick, but also a very good xc guy right off the bat. Young should still thrive in fast circuit races and could be one of the top U.S. xc guys at World XC since Derrick and True.

That's kind of silly and I've never seen that in a qualifying race. Mike Smith is no dummy, knows Young's strengths and weaknesses and probably figured 3:44/13:24 ability would allow him to qualify in any scenario. He just had a bad day and no strategy would have made a difference. It's very likely he would have been dropped at 13:40 pace.

This is spot on. He was still there with 800 to go. He just looked smoked even at the slow pace. Never looked like he was topped out on gears, just that he was tired. There is a difference between being too tired to kick and running up against your top speed.
I agree! That's one of the things that makes Hobbs special. He has strength from being a rock climber

Nico is a generational talent, but I agree with this take. He has not ever shown, and is unlikely to develop the speed needed to win tactical races and be a threat on the world stage in the 5k

That's what everyone saids about Rupp and he won a silver medal in the 10000m. There is no way to tell this early in his running career
Dude needs to move up to the marathon. I'd say of all American runners alive right now he is the most likely to hit a sub 2:00 marathon and join Kipchoge. Not saying odds are good, but higher for him than for any others in my opinion.
Don't bother with track, run XC in the Fall and then go Pro and debut at Boston 2022.

I'm not sure if you're serious but for Young to run at Kipchoge's level, he would need to be capable of running well under 13:00 and 27:00 on the track.
