My one question: has Nuguse proven he can beat what Hocker did today?

I wasn't really thinking of times when I said Hocker may probably have a better pro career than Webb. I honestly think Hocker can be competitive for medals at the Olympics and World Championships eventually based on what we saw today, which unfortunately Webb never really was. I don't know if he'll have a moment like Webb's American record though.

This is the quintessential LRC thread. First, Rojo is making a BIG deal out of Hocker's performances, then he backs off to provide some much "needed perspective." Then we have the Hocker is the 'second coming of ______' crowd on one end and his 'performances are overrated' crowd on the other end of spectrum. Well done. A day in the life of LRC after every meet.

I have no idea what his future holds, but that was one hell of an afternoon for a 19 year old. Can't we just appreciate it for what it was and hope the young man has a long, successful career?!

Webb's pro career is a reality. Hockers is a fantasy. Maybe he does well or maybe this is peak Hocker. Enjoy the moment where his possibilities seem endless.

This spring summer when everyone is racing we will learn what effect shoes and the like have had on races. Maybe we will have a dozen 3:28 guys this year as all the 332 guys run 4s faster.

Fantastic discussion! The shoes, easily worth 3 seconds. No doping here. The hair of Gabe Jennings, and the KICK of Alan Webb, the mind of Centro Jr... He’s also fully white making him more appealing to the fans here! Clearly a fan of Gen X, he must listen to grunge/rock and not rap!

The super shoes were available to most all ultra elites in 2019. Strangely, there didn’t seem to be any outlier performances in the 1500 and below in athletes utilising them (aside from Hassan’s 15 in Doha). The 5/10 is another story unto itself, as we have seen the last 2 years.

Just because he looked like a dweeb doesn’t mean he is a bad runner. Most distance runners are awkward.

Look at El G in street clothes (or his track uniform for that matter!) super nerd. Smooth AF running 55 second laps though.

And lots of guys (wightman, mcseeyn, musgala, grice, jaxob,...) ran 3s faster in 2019/2020 than before. Training or the shoes? Track shoes are like marathon shoes in 2017/2018. We are beginning to accept that they are faster but aren't sure how much. I am pretty sure the 1s/lap is probably too much but even like .33s/lap is huge. Eventually things will normalize and we will get used to the new times. You know like mid 90s where subb13 went from epic to common place in like 18months....

My theory is also that people are in abnormally good shape for indoors this year because of covid. We might not see big jumps in outdoor performances.

If there were such thing as magic shoes there would be more than one Cheptegei, more than one Gidey, and more than two Kipchoge and Bekeles.

3:53 is a great performance, but indoor has been equivalent to outdoor in middle distance time trials for a long time already. Even Rupp did it and he was never a miler. So don't count on those sub 3:50s outdoors just yet.

This is comical.

It’s history because we have a whole slew dudes nearly as talented as Webb, but with a far better mental game than Webb. And for fwiw, because we have so many guys, they are all able to run in a depressurized state compared to the fishbowl that Webb operated in.

If we are going to make a big deal about the shoes, why didn’t we put an asterisk on Webb’s time? Surely, Webb’s shoes in 2001 using Nike’s latest technology was light years better than what Ryun ran in 1966. Nike was 2 years old.

I’d bet money that the difference in performance attributable to shoes was bigger for Webb’s shoes vs Ryun’s shoes than for Hocker’s shoes vs Webb’s shoes.
