Yes, it does. An 8:42 with a 55 (54 according to RW) last lap is equivalent to one in the low 8:30s. Do you think Centro's Olympic win was just another 3:50 1500? Drew also beat a great HS runner. Are you not impressed?

Cain earned her hype - look at her accomplishments! As did Tuohy. No doubts there. Just because post hs doesn't live up to the promise doesnt discount what it was at the time. Mcarthur was wayyyy overblown because Brandon Miles dated her mother & he'd have done Anything to keep momma happy - and did. It was embarrassing & well known all over NOVA/DC - a joke. Slagowski was amazing & deserved that hype at the time. Too much media - social & otherwise just bad for young uns in general. Smart to lay low, work hard, resist pressure. Jenna Hutchins - focus & resist the pressure!

I forgot how much Milesplit loved McArthur when she was in high school. She ran what, 2:05 and 4:40s? Her having success at Nova but still transferring to Colorado confirms my suspicion that she's a bit of a diva.
I'd put Sam Affolder in the same category as her. Milesplit consistently referred to him as a national title favorite and even an all-time great. Just look at how many articles they wrote about him. Yet the kid's PRs were 1:52, 4:08, and 8:59, and his best XC finish was 23rd at NXN his junior year. He was a good runner but wayyyy overhyped. He'll be lucky to break 3:45 and qualify for a regional meet in college.
Slagowski was a phenomenal runner and way UNDERhyped in high school. He didn't perform in college for whatever reason (nobody on here knows him well enough to really say why) but the list of multiple-time sub-4:00 high schoolers is extremely short (Webb, Ryun, Hunter, Slagowski) and three sub-1:50 800s is also incredibly impressive. He's not the GOAT, he's probably not even in the conversation (Webb, Ryun, Verzbicas, Fernandez, Hunter, Young, Ritz, Rupp, Lindgren, even Chapa are all easily ahead of him, and Kessler will probably be soon) but he was a great runner and deserved to be hyped way more than he was. He was just so overshadowed by Hunter in the media he never really got the respect he deserved.

Dathan went 8:41-3200 and 13:44-5000. He won FL twice and ran 14:10 his senior year in cross country. He got the bronze from jr. cross country in Belgium.

You are so so so so so wrong. I’m sorry but Grant Fisher is far from overhyped. You can’t run a 13:02 5k and be considered overhyped. You are literally bashing against one of the best Olympic prospects we have this year. You don’t have to like the guy, but at least give credit where credit is due.

I think Cain was overhyped, but we hadn't seen anything like her in awhile. I believe Tuohy was properly hyped. She was one of the greatest high school cross runners ever. maybe no.1 of all time. People appreciated that. But it didn't seem the expectations were out of control. I think a lot of people learned from what happened to Cain and tempered expectations for her post high school career.

My only problem with this thread is that I don't really see how any of these runners are truly overhyped. Look at Brodey for example. Didn't he run 4:00-4:01. in high school that is insane.
And why are we looking at they did past highschool. You can could somehow argue that German fernandez was an overhyped hs runner if you look at his overall career but in just the 4 years of highschool he is probably has one of the best combined 1600,3200,5k times and titles to go with them.
And for the person who said claudia lane. Injuries plagued her track season and she didn't even get to defend for a 3rd footlocker title. I can't say that is overhyped due to injury. If she had 3 titles around the same time as tuohy people would probably look at tuohy a little differently.
Webb. Did he ever win anything? I honestly don’t know but he was hyped up as being the best miler ever
Tyrese Cooper is a great one. He’s been in so much trouble. What was the last thing he did? If he isn’t already in prison for years then he has a chance to turn it around.

Nico has great form. When he gets tired he would cross his arms and bob his head. Nothing less nothing more. This is being fixed as he gets older and stronger. His lower body and stride is almost perfect and it showed and continues to show
