Look, the question about this killing is not whether it was merited--the general was a monster--but whether it was wise. THAT is the subject that should be debated.
But in assessing that question, I think people should avoid crediting the strike to President Trump's re-election effort, and maybe not even try to tie it to his recent impeachment and upcoming Senate trial. All the evidence of the last three years suggests that IMPOTUS is not a forward thinker. He's not devious in that sense: He's not a long-term schemer or planner.
Instead, the President is the empitome of my era: "If it feels good, do it." He does stuff for instant gratification: trash the EPA and your donors adore you *now*; kill a bad guy (with immediate retaliation unlikely), and that exercise of power feels good *now*.
IMO people give DJT both too much and not enough credit for his intelligence; It's the wisdom of his actions that we must discuss.
