Rhetorical questions, but they did think that with the independent and coequal branches of government a new king could be avoided.
The sad fact is that the Constitution is just a piece of paper unless you have people of moral character and integrity to uphold it.
So here we are with the current GOP, though decades in the making.
Well, they’re not REALLY rhetorical questions. They’re actual questions. With answers, I’m imagining, ranging from somewhere between a simple “No,” to, “Yes, this was discussed and debated a lot, but we ended up with that solution because, ________.”
I wrote “rhetorical” as the answers should be obvious, and I do agree with you.

Having said that, I certainly do acknowledge that devising an airtight system of checks and balances is way harder than just uttering the phrase.
Nonetheless, it seems that there are “flaws” that are nearly unavoidable - like the people electing a Congress that refuses to use their checking power. And then there are flaws that might be entirely avoidable, like putting DOJ entirely under the control of a president who wants to be a king.

Graham Platner’s Wife Flagged Sexually Explicit Texts to His Senate Campaign The wife of the Maine Democratic Senate candidate last year told the campaign about texts she had found between Platner and other women
Days after Graham Platner announced his Maine Senate bid, his wife informed the campaign about a potential political problem she had previously discovered on the oyster farmer’s phone: sexually explicit texts with several women, according to people familiar with the matter.
Amy Gertner, who married Platner in 2023, told the campaign about messages she had found early in their marriage in the spring of 2025. In late August, as some aides were conducting opposition research on their own candidate, Gertner disclosed the texts to a campaign aide to make sure they didn’t pose a risk to her husband’s nascent campaign, those people said. The campaign had been preparing for a major rally over Labor Day weekend last year with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who was set to officially endorse Platner at the event.
You'd NEVER vote for someone who cheats on all his wives and makes crude comments about women, right?
