Let's think about this rationally. The United States only spends more on its military than then next seven highest-spending countries combined. What if those seven countries and a few more were to unite and declare war against us? We would be totally screwed! There is no such thing as "too much" military spending, mah boy! "Public schools" and "the environment" are for stoned hippies, anyway.

it's really not that simple. Much of the spending is to keep up with/stay ahead of new tech. For example, Russia seems to have a very high speed torpedo that would be a near certain carrier killer. That is a serious problem for our carrier-based defense. As are China's anti-carrier missiles.

We have to develop countermeasures to stay ahead of new weapons. New tech is very expensive and risky. It's not like we're buying more jeeps and rifles here. We're trying to preserve our technological lead.

So in order to keep up with China and Russia, we have to outspend them by 3-1 or more on an annual basis?

Let's not be naive here. There is ample historical evidence suggesting that

the people pulling the purse strings will manage to direct plenty of the increased spending to areas where there isn't actual need. We are already spending mountains of taxpayer dollars on superfluities.

Of course we have to keep pace with tech advances. But there is plenty waste, fraud, and abuse (TM Republican Party) that could be eliminated to shore up money for those needs. We don't need to hamstring ever other government program in order to keep pouring money into the military industrial complex.

the real problem with military spending is...wait for it...health care. Like everything else in this country. The military is turning into a vast health care delivery service and that, more than anything else, is what is inflating miliary budgets while only 1/3 of our naval attack aircraft can fly.

But no politician will ever cut health care for armed services. So we are seriously f'd again, by health care.

we need single payer. Make everyone pay a premium. This thing we are doing is insane.

You initially said we need more spending primarily to keep up with tech advancements in other countries. Now you're saying its because of healthcare? In any case, you'll get no argument from me on the need for single payer.

However, it looks like healthcare costs are roughly a tenth of the overall DoD budget. It's a problem, not THE problem. The DoD's spending is not subject to the same level of scrutiny as other executive departments; there are chestnuts aplenty.

A board appointed by the DoD has estimated that we could save $125 billion over five years by eliminating bureaucratic waste. The CBO estimated that we could save close to $50 billion over ten years just by replacing the insanely expensive F-35 fighter project (estimated to cost over $1 trillion when all is said and done) with planes that actually, you know, work. And that's to say nothing of the billions in pork spending on bases, tanks, or ships that the army has explicitly said it doesn't want or need.
