Extortion

Impeachment and removal from office.

That won't happen because Trump would never say it that way. The question to Volker was a great way to allow Volker to say something misleading without committing perjury. Offer up basically a direct quote and say, "Did he ever say this?" Even if there is just one word different from what he said, and what the question is, Volker can say, "No, he did not."

Example: I could say, "I want you to force this woman to get an abortion, and if she won't do it, I want you to hire a hitman to off her." And a lawyer could ask, "Did he ever ask you to kill this woman?" and you could truthfully answer "No, he did not."

This is the whole problem with this case. There probably won't be a smoking gun. You can have everyone agree that they thought the intent was to investigate the Biden's in exchange for foreign aid. And yet, Trump can just say, "They all misinterpreted me. I never said that."

This is neither a civil suit or a criminal case. My guess is if it was a civil suit, Trump would lose, and if it were a criminal case, he would be found innocent. But this is a political case. I can tell you this, if we were in a recession right now, he'd be impeached tomorrow.

Yes, Bill Clinton lied under oath and tried to cover up his affair with an intern.

Charged with perjury and obstruction of justice, the feeling was that lying about this particular thing was not big enough to justify removing a president from office.

The Republicans will come to the consensus that although Trump did bribe Ukraine, it isn't bad enough of an offense to warrant removing him from office.

There is a precedent of acquitting a president who obviously was guilty of the actions he was charged with.

Of course bribing a foreign president is worse than lying about an affair, but that doesn't matter.

I disagree. You don't get away with a crime just because you couched your orders in imprecise language.

If you say, "You have a nice family. It would be a shame if something happened to it." --- that's a legit threat.

If this were a criminal trial, Tiny would be convicted. This is especially true if Sondland testifies that he had no doubt about what the president wanted.

Tiny knowingly hired a foreign agent to be our national security advisor. Our president is a traitor.

So far we have hard-hitting testimony against fat boy, and attempts to minimize or spin by ‘pubs (followed by revised statements). Each round we get closer to impeachment, and ‘pubs look like children with their hands in the cookie jar.

Don’t think Sondland wants to take the fall for this, but even if he did more witnesses are coming forward. ‘Pubs are sliding down the hill.

Agree. Which is pretty much the sort of society we have now. "Don't agree with how I handled this? Tough. I have the power. You can screw me when you have the upper hand." Honesty, respect for the rule of law ... so passé.

I never liked the argument that it is a waste of time to impeach him just because you know the Republicans will not convict him.

Sondland understandably looks a lot more nervous than other witnesses so far.

It will be interesting to see if he takes the 5th and what questions he might refuse to answer.

I'm still of the opinion that his best course of action is to come clean on everything. But we will see what he and his lawyer thinks about that.

Sondland's opening statement indicates that he will cooperate fully and tell the truth. He even complained that the state department won't let him have the materials he needed to prepare for his testimony.
