But being removed would be historical and embarrassing - to be the first president ever to be removed from office by Congress.

And that's why the Constitution put that in there.

To have a remedy for corruption in between elections.

Agent orange will suffer enough embarrassment being impeached and not re elected. He would hurl insults at the GOP for not doing enough to help him, etc. He wouldn’t be able to let it go, especially as his twitter account following craters. I think in that scenario there aren’t any friends left and many more who will want to take him out as an example. If Rs lose both WH and Senate next year Trump will be completely exposed and no one will have his back in trying to fight off all the lawsuits. He would go to jail. The GOP is completely invested in him now. If this all goes wrong they will just do a 180 and start all over, still using that eternal victim card though.

What nixon did was cover up a crime that other people committed. He gave orders to obstruct justice. But nixon did not break into the DNC and didn't order it done.

what Trump did was actually the crime. He actually invited foreign nations to mess with our elections and sacrificed US security to get that done.

But Trump didn't really cover this one up, did he? Someone else ordered the transcript put in the secret server so it wouldn't get out. probably someone else.

So really what trump did is worse than nixon, since trump actually did the high crime.

And of course trump obstructed justice every day and twice on sunday in Russia-gate.

So he did it all. Crimes, cover-ups, obstruction, probably perjury.

If trump had shame, he'd be gone. But he doesn't.

Ok. Let me be clear here.

Impeached, convicted, and removed is different from "impeached". I would prefer he be removed by impeachment and conviction also to any other way. He deserves that. That is the most just and moral thing to have happen.

If I have to settle for an OUTCOME, and that outcome is JUST impeachment (not conviction) or him being removed by vote in 2020 (no guarantee here that he would lose if impeached but not convicted), then I choose him being out of office.

But if by some miracle the R's in the senate grow a spine then hopefully the violence will be less.

Don't you think impeachment and removal would make him into a martyr and just make the magas think their hero was cut down but lyin' cheatin' stinkin' deep statin' libs? And just make them feel they can't win? Wouldn't it be better to beat him in a legit election? So they don't try again? So they don't think 'ah, trump *would* have succeeded had he not been ousted?"

No, removal by a majority Senate vote means that Rs agreed and supported it. It would actually reflect the people's will since the only way they will vote to convict is if the Senators start to feel pressure back home to take action. It would embolden a law and order attitude in this country. There is a significant portion of his supporters that have swung out to libertarian extreme thinking that trump represents the revolution against our corrupt gov't. Yeah, those folks would get crushed in that scenario no doubt. We got a hint of their animosity at that Don Jr. book event, they are looking for blood.

You are right, so what we should ask is why the different treatment now? The reason is the electorate's tolerance and level of politicization has shifted significantly since those days. Simpletons are now numb enough to this sort of lawlessness that it's become more acceptable. It has become so acceptable that a deplorable like trump was elected. That was sadly mostly to do with the people's will.

Agip, I'll add further that when Nixon won most of his supporters weren't expecting him to be corrupt. Shrewd? Sure but not criminal. Trump supporters KNOW he doesn't have a moral compass so how can it be a shock whenever he breaks the law?

1) I believe Trump will be impeached. This will happen FOR SURE.

2) I believe he will be forced to resign or that the Senate will actually come around and convict him. I have said already that this is less of a certainty than him being impeached.

3) Trump will go to prison. This is more certain than the Senate convicting him. This is also something I have already said.

4) If Trump makes it to the end of his term without having to resign or without being removed, I will be wrong about that. Meh.

What would be interesting would be if he makes it to the election and is re-elected but then impeached and removed by the Senate. Seems unbelievable to have that happen, but I wonder what would be the situation if that happened. I mean, technically, a President could strangle someone to death unprovoked in the Oval Office between being re-elected and inauguration day. I wonder what would happen in that case.

Ummm . . . what Universe are you living in where you can find even a single person who is not aware that the Ukraine president knew that he would get the release of the military aid if he did the right thing?

There is no perfect solution. It has to be made clear that US Presidents can not do what Trump did here. It needs to be clear that SOME politicians will actually uphold their oath of office. Yes, SOME Trump supporters will feel that way, and that's unfortunate. The next President (who will be a Democrat) must reach out to those disenfranchised American citizens. While I like Warren a lot, she is not the best one to do that. Biden is probably better in that way, and I think Klobachar or Buttigieg would be better in that way also. Seems incorrect to think Bernie couldn't appeal to disenfranchised Americans, but his push for free college just doesn't sit well with them (same with Warren).

We can't just sit idly by while a criminal President continues his criminal ways in the White House.
