if you know that your SS benefit will take care of you when you get old...you don't feel the need to save. So you don't. Which is rational for many people...two SS benefits in a middle class household will provide say $50,000/yr, which isn't too shabby.
So if you want to increase the value of benefits like that...you will also likely increase the 'wealth inequality' numbers. Not 1:1, but to some degree.
The answer of course is to adjust the wealth inequality numbers to take the high value of SS and medicare into account. when you do that, inequality numbers come WAY down. I mean a two worker household on SS has a risk free annuity worth almost a million dollars. But instead we'd rather talk about how poor those people are.
It's an interesting concept. Unintended conseqences are one of my favorite things.
Higher income people tend to live longer. If you factor that in, SS is much more regressive than you think.
They can also afford to delay their SS benefits, whether they "retire" from their day job or not. Say you retired at 65, but you decide not to claim SS until you are 70, your total benefit increases. Lower income people who depend on SS don't have that option.
well ok but that's on the margin. And when you're dead you're dead - you are off the stats.
the point is that if you know SS and medicare will take care of your retirement...you won't save as much during your working years. So that will make you appear poorer...but it's a false appearance .
Because SS and medicare represents a whole lot of wealth. It just doesn't show up in most inequality stats.
