I don't know where to begin. You're telling us your FAFSA EFC is 50k? I call bullsh!t. Also, your kids can't contribute anything? Work during the summer, christmas, spring break etc? I made 7.5-8k per school year and that was while running, and I don't think I worked that hard. Also, you don't have any deductions so your marginal rate isn't actually 35%? You sure about that? Healthcare, mortgage, charitable deductions, these don't drop your rate at all?

While I agree with what you say about needing to cut defense spending and all that jazz, my kids have jobs. They pay for their own cars and insurance. I do help them, but the two who are in university do what they can to help with expenses. The combo of my wife and I make less than half what you make. I'm perfectly happy, plus I'm Canadian, so I'm taxed more than you to begin with (I think).
Forgo your enjoyment of life! Accept a dramatically lover standard of living! Live for the sake of everyone except yorself! Pay up!

I live in europe, at the time of writing a € is worth 1.3 dollar
So yeah.. I got the cheapest place possible which is quite unrealistic, and that in the center of Berlin (capital of Germany). A lot of action is going on here, it does not look like New York but it one of Europe's places to be.
Rent: €100 (so normal people spend 300 - 500€, if you move together & get kids you can get great places here from on 700€+)
Monthly costs (food & toothpaste): €150.
Insurances: €20 (is actually more expensive but because I earn little I get 70€ deduction)
290€ per month = 380$
THATS IT.
I have an amazing life. I travel a lot (hitchhiking) all trough Europe, I got enough money to build on my bike, buy musical instruments, etc.
Furniture I build/find myself, tools I borrow from friends. My most valuable item is my laptop.
I expect to keep on living like this for another 5 years at least. That is a total then of 18000 - 20000€ which I need for this lifestyle. I have got most of that already in the bank, in case of emergency I could drop all my work and still survive a couple of years.
Back when I was traveling around spain and doing volunteer work in exchange for food and a bed I spend about 200€ in half a year time.
Now I understand that this lifestyle does not appeal to everyone and does not work in every place. I will move on too, get kids, get a fixed place and save up for studies and retirements. However, this lifestyle is 100% satisfying, I am not missing out on anything.
I can not imagine spending much more than half a million € on myself in a life time.
You have to only work for this 2 years. Of course you share this with your wife and 3 kids, but get real. You are f*cking rich. Which is fine. But because the value I add to the world is can not be expressed with money (though its just as important) and likely the value you add to the world is mostly money, I don't think its unfair that you give away an extra big cut of money to the community. (And I will promise I will give away an extra big cut of art, muisc, inspiration and love so you don't have and the world will still be in balance!)
Serious question to all the post-college single guys who are advocating living in a major city on $50k/year.
Do you date or go out with friends? On a proper date with a girl, I generally anticipate paying well over $100 for dinner and a couple drinks/entertainment, and that's even if I let her chip in for a couple rounds/pay for the taxi fare. Same when I'm out with my mates, usually $50/head for dinner, and then hit the bars etc. for another $100 or so, then some late-night diner in the meatpacking plus the taxi home could run another $50.
And a nice suit and a couple ties will run you easily half of your $1500 monthly budget. What if you want to fly home for a week-long/weekend getaway for vacation to see your family?N
No offense, but it's hard to live a proper "adult" lifestyle (not living with roommates or eating like a pauper) in a big city (like NY) on less than $100k/year. I certainly don't live a "lavish" lifestyle (no car or designer clothes, heck I do most of my shopping at TJ Maxx, but I don't make myself suffer either).
op did not say he was struggling simply that he is miscategorized by political broad statements. He has more money because he earns more money. EARNS. He uses his money to pay his own way and that of his dependants. He get no help to pay his kids tuition, instead he overpays (relatively) which funds the reduced tuition of those less fortunate. He pays more taxes too which fund programs for those less fortunate. He has a better lifestyle with the remaining money and that is his right. He earns it.
Those quick to point out overspending - there is no information to suggest that. He may have newer or better things because he earns them. It is unfair to say that these are unnecessary. Anything outside food clothing and shelter are technically unnecessary. Let he who has no tv no game system, no cellphone, only one pair of shoes etc cast the first stone. Extravagance is defined as anything he has that I could not afford. But the I changes based on the income of the complainant.

It's not like taxes. If he doesn't like paying it, he doesn't have to pay it. He could easily pay $0 for tuition. And save his money.

Free market at work. rich people want to over pay for college so the schools raise the price for them. Poor people don't so the school charges what it actually costs. Sounds excellent market segmentation.
