If you want a record, check with Guiness.

If you don't want to be called out on LRC, don't cheat. If you do, you'll mess up some minor detail, and you will get caught. No thread on here will gain any traction without pretty compelling evidence of cheating, so if you do it honestly, you'll be in the clear.

Would this be enough to exonerate him?

Dustin probably wrote the carefully crafted facebook post and got the detail about the toe wrong. All of RY's toes probably looked pretty bad and Dustin mentioned the wrong one.

Also probably shows that the merry men of East Sheen read letsrun.

There are not a lot of ways to get from one point on the AT to another point except by foot.

I think that Guinness insist that the whole of the route is on roads that can be legally accessed by both runner and vehicle. This might well rule out shortcuts across the desert. I do know that the support vehicle cannot travel in front of the runner. (Not sure how this works if it goes off to pick up supplies). Presumably it means travelling directly in front to shelter from the wind?

Interestingly the minimum distance that they insist on (LA to NY town halls) is much less than the distance Frank Giannino ran (or indeed the previous record holder whose name escapes me).

I'll ask Guinness for all their criteria to accept a record.

That's jog/walking 4.5 to 5 mph for 16 hours a day. Or 12:00 to 13:20 mile pace. For runners, that sounds easy except for the cumulative effect of little recovery time for 6 straight weeks. Then it's not easy.

Well Asprihanal Aalto is actually from Finland. An average of 76.776 miles/day is a LOT. And most people, even ultrarunners can't comprehend what that means. I think I counted 9 3100 mile winners who had more than 70 miles/day since 1997.

A run on the open roads is a lot harder. I would think you can take of at least 10% of the loop performance. Support logistics are way more complicated and take up way more time.

You can do live tracking inc HR and cadence off a Garmin...

Then upload the data to Strava as soon as you finish each day. I can't see you on Strava yet.

That's just a suggestion and obviously if you think you are going to break a 'record' you'll need a lot more.

I want to come up with a foolproof method of verifying an attempt. I suppose constant filming from the backup vehicle would be good but impractical, as it wouldn't always be with me.

If the data had been uploaded immediately after each run, or at least the same day, I'd have some trust in it. They've now had weeks to tweak the timings, HR and cadence points until they look consistent. I'd wouldn't trust any data made available through Strava etc. at this time.

I *might* trust data that was directly viewable on TomTom's website, as runs can apparently only be uploaded directly from the watch and not edited afterwards. Would need to verified that that is the case. And perhaps a statement from a TomTom employee that the data was uploaded on the correct date and not changed.

Of course, perhaps Michael ran some of the way whilst Rob was sleeping.

Garmin watches can be synced to your private Garmin Connect account, downloaded as a TCX file, edited, and then uploaded to your public Garmin account and across to Strava. Only Garmin themselves would be able to confirm if it was uploaded manually or sync'd from the watch - it's not visible when viewing the event.

So the more we dig into this the more we seem to agree that there is no way of proving via GPS that one did a legit transcon?

... and if we want to get really paranoid, newer Garmin watches mount as a filesystem when you plug them in. Each activity is stored in an individual file in .FIT format. I'm quite sure that with a bit of work, you could push edited activities back onto the watch before you sync them.
