I was curious as to how much the aforementioned benefits might be for an unemployed family with 8 dependents. It's really quite interesting, you can enter all the variables on the UK government website and it gives you an amount. As a hard working American it astounds me how easy it appears to get these benefits, or entitlements as the UK calls them.

Anyway, there are loads of different variables so this number might be way off, but the final number I got was £51,370.30 per year. For just sitting on your duff and doing nothing. Not actively seeking a job, not working, nada.

If the wind and currents are going the right way then he should just go down to the sea and ride a Mattressman Mattress up to JOG. That would surely be a world recird.

I'm not defending the system, my attitude is the same as most people's but did you not see the thing about benefit caps?

Years ago I once asked someone involved in the system how the benefits system was so lax (based on having zero real knowledge) - his answer was that a civilised society has to accept that if we don't want people begging and stealing then we will need a benefits system and that a certain percentage of people are going to decide that they can live like this. I don't like this answer any more than anyone else but I don't have a valid, real-world response to it.

Looks like Dave and company has stopped near the Higher Longford Cottages tonight to get a well deserved night's sleep from all that exhausting bike riding. Tracker has been off for over 2 hours.

They travelled a motor assisted 41 miles in about 9.5 hours today and have totalled 90 miles since the start of the "run". I think the record is safe.

I have no position on the UK welfare system one way or another, but 52k pounds (roughly 64k in USD) is not much at all when you consider it is intended to support a family of 10 people.

This from Terrie his missus - on the live feed saying he was now cycling - She actually thinks he can drive and ride a motorized bike and still claim a LEJOG!

If you don't go back this is all a waste of time, you can't get a ride for part of the way, no matter how small, regardless of the reason. You have to cover the entire distance on foot.

It's a lot of money when 8 of those are just kids and you can reuse all their clothing, shoes, bedding, etc. Buying in bulk from Costco is cheap and the things like TV, internet, computers, utilities, etc. are reused by everyone so you don't have much of an incremental cost per child. And the Readings homeschool their children so it's not like they even pay anything for education.
