Actually, I am quite POSITIVE that the whole POSE explanation and the people who perpetuate it are confused, misguided or just plain wrong. The evidence has been provided numerous times in this thread alone.

OK, more precisely, the principle of conservation of angular momentum. There is a relationship to coriolis force here, but I don't want to waste my time.

The point with conservation of angular momentum with a spinning ice skater is that when center of the mass of legs and arms are located far from the center of the spinning axis, the spinning is at a certain rate, then when the legs and arms are pulled towards the center of the body, the result is that without the skater exerting any additional external force to create a faster spin, the body begins to spin faster because angular momentum is constant and is proportional to mass times distance from the center of mass on the arms to the axis.

So with the runner, the leg is pivoting or rotating forward from the axis at the hip. When a quick, forceful pull is exerted, initially the lower leg comes upwards but the thigh is moving forwards (rotation about the hip axis) only very slowly. Then when the lower leg reaches a height that makes the center of mass of the leg a bit higher and closer to the hips, the angular momentum of the leg moving forward stays the same but the horizontal rotation speed or forward movement of the knee increases.

Simple high school physics. Of course, the disregard for the substance of these posts and focus on ridicule is also simple high school immaturity and unwillingness to seriously study something new that requires considerable effort to learn as opposed to the adolescents tendency to discount anything that doesn't achieve instant gratification.

We've been over the high school physics before and JHuffman and others have shown they do not have a good grasp. Have you read the whole thread or are you just jumping in to spout the same lines that have been previously refuted? Have you discovered how a serious look was taken at the fundamentals of POSE as described by several POSE adherents? Did you read the posts that explained their elemental flaws or change in substance?

Continuing to tout POSE on letsrun just opens one up to obvious critique since the basics are so flawed. Feel free to POSE all you want on the POSE site, but I don't know why people are still surprised when they get called on their silly talk in other forums.

The Coriolis force isn't even strong enough to make the water in toilets, drains, etc. spin the opposite way in the southern hemisphere. It has no effect on running.

Actually I have gone through every video except the most recent 2, which don't play on my PC (wonder why).

I have been trying much to imitate the Pose running style. I still find that everything in place, landing on forefoot and less time in the air, the push off still seems to get me much faster in timed 200's. Perhaps I should heed the advice just given by the Poser to wait till the GCM is beyond the support leg before pulling quickly, but then wouldn't my cadence slows down? Gonna try it this evening.

Man, I wanna do 1:54 for 800 metres. Next weekend is the final All-Comer's meet in the city and if I can run 1:54 I can come in at least top 3, I think. You did it so relaxed too, like jogging, or is it just because your legs are long? And you were running more than 2 rounds??? Cool stuff! My inspiration!

You obviously haven't read my earlier posts. You're just an arrogant jerk.

There is more than one way of coaching. One is to describe everything with physics terminology, and another is to use terminology that works on the athlete to get him/her to focus on certain things in his form so that he produces specific actions in his technique.

Take for example doing a squat. If you try to push the barbell up that is on your shoulders versus trying to push the earth beneath away from you, you will see that the latter frame of mind/reference makes a lot of difference even if it doesn't make any sense.

And since you want to talk physics, the earth DOES move away from you when you get up from a squat or jump off the earth. That is Newton's Third Law. It's just that because the earth's mass is so huge, the movement of the earth would be immeasurably small compared to the movement of our bodies.

Or doing a push-up. If we think push our bodies up versus pushing the earth away from us. The effect is different even if the latter sounds ridiculous. This is the difference between coaching using physics terminology, which is good to a certain extent, and trying to get your athlete to perform in a certain way by using terminology that effects a certain psychological frame.
