I read somewhere that north of 70% of the 18-29 year olds voted Democrat. Of that 18-29 group of voters, 60% of the whites went Dem, 89% black, 68% latino. I'm not going to do the math, someone can correct me if it ends up being wrong. But this is a serious problem for Republicans. A quick check says another 9 million or so kids will be eligible to vote in 2024. They are not going to vote for the current Republican platform. Meanwhile, old conservatives continue to die.
If the Dems run Biden again, he could squeak by. If they find someone younger, it could be a Clinton or Obama style beating.
30 years ago, most Americans in their twenties voted Democrat.
They are in their fifties now and mostly lean Republican.
Don’t assume today’s youth will stay with the Democrats as they age.
Now, the future Republicans will be fine with gay marriage and trans people. They may like Medicare for all but oppose the New Democrats push for Single payer health insurance or whatever the future progressive goal is.
In fairness, I think it's important to remember that 60% of the Senate seats that were up in this election were held by Republicans. Structurally speaking, this was going to be something of an uphill battle for them.
Fourteen seats held by Democrats and 21 seats held by Republicans were up for election in 2022. Republicans were defending two Senate seats in states Joe Biden (D) won in the 2020 presidential election: Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Democrats were not defending any Senate seats in states Donald Trump (R) won in 2020.
So I don't think the Dems' holding of the Senate was quite the phenomenon that many are making it out to be.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Separate topic: I think there will be a very hard fight for GA's Senate seat. Moving from 50 to 51 Senators would give the Dems some breathing room: They would only have to have Manchin *or* Sinema on board with a particular piece of legislation. And they wouldn't have to worry so much about a Dem Senator croaking and being replaced by a GOPer who'd be nominated by a Republican governor.
But honestly I suspect it won't matter that much. Looks like the House will be GOP, and the Senate Dems will spend the next two years confirming judges and raising money for 2024--and blaming the House for legislative inaction.
Please Disco, Carmine, Adult in Room, Jamin, Hardloper and the rest of you, do not do anything impulsively. We still want you around.
Remember how bad RCP and TrafalgAr
got the Nevada senate campaign.
pre-election polls:
NYT/Siena: Even
USA Today/Suffolk: D+1
NV Independent: D+2

InsiderAdv: R+6
Trafalgar: R+5

538: 51% R chance
RCP: R+3.4

Weirdly, I seem to have gone the other way. I remember being sort of distraught when Clinton was elected. I rather liked George HW Bush. That was the first presidential election I voted in. I'd have been 18, I guess.
But I don't really identify myself as a Republican or Democrat. I'm more issues based. The Republicans used to be for small government and staying out of people's lives. To be fair, they've never really shrunk government, and they're more involved in people's lives than ever. The party changed, and changed too much for me. Exorcise the religious right. Come up with something novel and not just push tax cuts for the rich. Stop being a party that can't come to the table and negotiate. Nominate qualified judges who aren't extremists. I could go on...

1) Everyone knows the party that wins the presidency gets killed in the next mid-term.
2) With abortion and the GOP nominating some of these M AGA candidates, some on the left were hoping the Democrats would somehow defy the norms.
That's not going to happen. Why? Check out this photo.
I'm stunned by how expensive everything is every time I go to the store. A bag of chips now costs more than $5? Mind blown.
Fair or not (and if Trump was reelected I still think inflation would be an issue), the party in power gets blamed when people are having pocketbook issues.
Verdict: Its going to be a bloodbath for the Democrats in two weeks.
Sincerely,
Rojo
PS. Don't get mad at me. Remember, I'm a long time registered Dem.
Rojo saved us from the GOP. Thank you Rojo for being a registered Democrat.

That's not completely true. 30 years ago most Americans in their 20s didn't vote at all. The people in their 50s voting now are a different pool of people, with many voters who didn't start voting until they got older. The shift in voting patterns may be more about changing composition, rather than voters getting more conservative.
The current young voters seem to be voting at a higher rate, but it will take a while to see if that will hold up this year. Then again, it looks like every group is voting at a higher rate since 2016.
I'm back to happy now that UW beat Eugene Clown College at their stadium

It just keeps getting worse for the Dems. RCP is now projecting a 54 seat GOP for the Senate. Wow! Don Bolduc has surged into the lead in NH (another upset if true). Patty Murray should win in WA, but her opponent is making it a close race- can the GOP can end up with 55 seats? Probably not, but I'm putting it out there.
My prediction of a 52 seat GOP is looking more like a minimum.
Ok, so you were totally wrong, eh? Thanks for playing.
The original post of this thread didn't age well
Many people, myself included used to side with the GOP when we were younger. Yes, I used to listen to Rush Limbaugh and think he was speaking truth. But as you age and get wiser and can really see the race baiting, culture war stuff for what it is. Ever since the right wing ecosystem was created they have been predicting the same things over and over and over. Liberals and Democrats are trying to institute:
1. A country governed by Gay shaira law
2. Communism
3. A welfare state
4. Open borders where scary people are going to come rape women and kill them.
I heard an insightful interview from a person that worked in Cable News. They explained how it works.
Fox news curates all the news stories across the country and they seek out stories that "prove" and any of these topics. Or a story about liberal over reach. It could be a tiny weird story from podunk California. Totally meaningless and inconsequential for the country. Then Hannity, Tucker, Ingrahm start talking about it nightly. Then the rest of the right wing ecosystem starts talking about it. Then the cable news talkers says "you won't hear about this on the mainstream media, why not?"! Then the right wing ecosystem starts telling their listeners that this is a huge indicator of where the country is going. Then the main street media starts covering it because they are shamed into it and want to "both sides" everything. Then old ladies are talking about it at church and shaking their heads at how the country is terrible and they all need to vote GOP.
This is how stories like CRT, Caravans, Green M&Ms, drag queen shows in schools get birthed.
Three contested Senate seats come down to the wire.
Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Arizona.
Surprisingly, Dems defy exit polls and eke out wins in all 3.

“WE SHOULD’VE WON! Everyone agrees with us!! We’re popular, right? RIGHT???!!! It has to have been stolen! Don’t believe your lying eyes!”
By the way, the definition of a swing state is one that comes down to the wire. Every election in a swing state comes down to the wire. Your candidates are just so toxic that they lost all of them.
Interestingly, to determine the winner, they count votes, not exit polls.
This thread is an archive of stupidity
