Where we previously misunderstood each other, and in comparison to what Steve Palladino proposes, I'm now clearly understanding the differences. Reading Sirpoc’s table, he used to run 3 of these workouts plus the “easy” long run on Sunday.
The real difference compared to Steve’s latest plans is the weekend structure. This method (Sirpoc's) includes, for example, 8x3’ at threshold pace on Saturday, and then 2h20’ easy on Sunday. Steve’s method, on the other hand, includes 50–60’ easy on Saturday and a long run on Sunday with 30–60’ slower than marathon pace, but with longer total long run distances than Sirpoc’s.
In the end, the total weekly volume isn’t much different. What changes is that with Sirpoc you might do 30–33 km on Sunday and 15–20 km on Saturday, while with Palladino it’s more like 10–12 km on Saturday and 34–40 km on Sunday.
I think that occasionally, especially when targeting a key long run, doing a long run “Palladino-style” is beneficial. But in the long run, what really pays off is the consistency of the 2–3 sub-threshold workouts during the week.
