There are major structural impediments to the success of anyone outside of the Rs and Ds succeeding on a national level - obviously including POTUS. As a result, one (or both) political parties simply choosing who they want to run without a primary election is indeed a significant issue for democracy.

agreed. The two parties are quasi-governmental bodies given their dominance. The question I pose is which would give us a better chance at a good president: Party officials choosing or this crazy primary system that favors the extreme candidates who appeal strongest to the base? And has zero filtering for qualifications?
I'm pretty sure the Dems would do a good job. The Rs would probably just sell their nomination at auction and call it conservatism.
This is what this country needs a whole lot more of: good old fashioned love-thy-neighbor politics. Remind us of how we are supposed to act.
