Here is how I see this playing out.
Democrats in the house vote for impeachment just before the end of the year.
The senate does take up the matter, but moves very slowly. The whole process drags on to the summer of 2020. Then there are calls to just let the people decide at the ballot box.
So Republican senators never have to take the tough vote.
But which party does that favor more?
That's a good scenario for Democrats who want people to come out to vote against Trump.
Republicans may want a different nominee than Trump but are scared to support another Republican against him in the primaries.
Their best move may be to survive the primaries, then convict Trump and have him removed before the convention.
Then put up someone like Romney in the general vs Biden or Warren or whoever.
Republicans fear crossing Trump in a Republican primary, but also fear being associated with Trump in the general.

Think about this twist on your scenario. You could easily have Tiny win the primaries, get removed from office, and still be the Republican nominee.
