Flagpole - you will be leaving soon. We would love to have you hang around. But if you do leave, please lets us know how you do against the Dow. In 4 years I am pretty sure you will have beaten it 38 out of 39 years. Very, very impressive.
There is no if about it. I will not post here in any thread about any topic while Trump is in office. You're wrong about the number of years. I don't plan to update here how I did against the Dow during the time I will be gone. It's really only interesting in the moment. I never look back...just ahead.

Huh. I did not realize how significant the 2024 election was.

So far in 2025, how is ol' Flagpole doing?
Dow YTD: UP 1.59%
Flagpole YTD: UP 1.93%
sorry to hear of your hiatus away from the DGTD club. I will be looking forward to hearing from you sometime in the future and good luck with everything.
Honestly, Flagpole, we will miss you. Wish you would stay around. You often bring great insight to this forum. If you do actually leave, can you please tell us all your holdings and at which price they were bought so we can track your portfolio during your hiatus?

Yeah, and it got me thinking, what about the other threads you contribute to?
I ask this as a question of perhaps some significance - if you stop participating in debate and discussion when your party loses, then haven't you allowed yourself to be truly defeated, and is there no greater defeat than being silenced?
Perhaps the most valuable time for dissent is when you are in the minority, and your voice is truly needed to return the balance of power to one in which your views are more accepted and adopted.
Put another way, thwarting your voice of dissent is exactly what Trump wants. Let that sink in.

Thanks. Just had enough Trumper nonsense to last a lifetime, so I'm going to ignore that POS and the morons who support him as much as possible these next 4 years (or however long he's in office). The Lovely Mrs. Flagpole will have joined me in retirement by the time Trump's term is over, so who knows where we will be off to, but I PLAN to post on Inaguration Day in 2029 no matter who it is (unless it is DONALD Trump again).

Roger that.
One thing of yours that always served a good purpose is your strategy for saving, paying down debt, and investing systematically and regularly. I think that is a great message for new investors in particular to hear and work with. And a forum like the messageboard is uniquely positioned so as to tap into that demographic, so your advice may have been one that could do a real lot of good for their finances and their financial security going forward, both for themselves and their families. That is no small matter, as I am sure you can see.
But we all need to do what we need to do to stay sane, so take care and keep in mind that the door is always open.

Nah...it's not being personally defeated or silenced. I now have all the information I need about Trumpers, so it would be a waste of my time to comment here (ANYWHERE on Letsrun.com).
Just going to go enjoy my retirement DESPITE the Orange POS moron in the White House. My commenting here about Trump doesn't move the needle at all...just like no one's comments here do. Voting matters, but just about everything else is throwing words into the ether.
IF Trump does someting that requires public protest, I'll be there (not here) for that, but trying to reason with Trump cult members on a running message board doesn't really accomplish anything.

I appreciate the nice comments. People will have to get their financial advice elsewhere. Hopefully it won't be from annuity sellers. The serious newbies should start with Dave Ramsey just for a good template (though he's wrong about credit card useage and how much to EXPECT the market to return annually (he says up to 12% and that people can take 10% in retirement)...maybe if you're 85 when you retire you can take 10%.

1) Of course you will miss me. I am the example of what a human being should be. I suggest you study the lives of Jimmy Carter and Fred Rogers and Dolly Parton to be like inspired.
2) No, I will not tell you all of my holdings and at what price they were purchased.
3) My stuff is very well diversified, so mainly if you just average the Dow, S&P 500 and NASDAQ, you will get close to what I have gained in any given year. If you wanted to average in an AVERAGE of international stocks, that would get you even closer.

I think you are wrong, and I say that in all due respect. Look at the number of upvotes that posts get that speak out against the far right zealots. That speaks volumes.
Feedback on a forum like this is very slanted towards the extremes. Some may even be getting reimbursed to post that stuff. But the response of acceptance for well reasoned and mainstream views gets the majority of upvotes, unless a thread is just so slanted to the right that the left and mainstream would ignore it.
Again, I think the board is more left leaning as a whole than you think, though the preponderance of threads are started by the right. So, speaking up is important, and I do appreciate your contributions in that regard.
But again, do what you need to do, and I don't argue with that point of yours.

I will be sad to see you go, you seem like a decent guy. But can't believe you didn't see that Trump was going to win.

Best wishes Flaggy. I am sure you will benefit from spending less time here. By the way, I generally agree with most of your financial advice. As far as politics, much blame goes to both parties.

as much as I will miss your presence, FP, I admire and applaud anyone moving away from social media. It's the right thing to do.
Except Strava. Not sure how all this would work without Strava.
You've been here for 20+ years, right? Amazing stuff.

Flagpole is (much like our soon to be dear leader) a massive attention whore, above all else.
I give it a week before he's back under "Ghost of Flagpole" and while asking wejo to do an IP check

aw come on
Flagpole is an institution, and his heart is in the right place.
Sure, he tries to get attention but being a class clown sometimes isn't so bad is it? Not very high on my list of 'things to be glad when they disappear.'

Well that's my point - he won't be gone lol.
You can rest easy knowing that each pseudo-Flagpole account is actually him.

eh who cares
I'm happy to go along with whatever anonymity people want to claim around there. It's just a show...if people want to take on different characters I'm fine with that.
Would be lame if a neo-flagpole did not disguise his new character well enough though, oui.
