Firman is a tricky course. It's way more technical than one would think. The start is bumpy, and then the backside of the course is dusty and has a hard hairpin 1k into it after a short uphill. You drop back down pretty much immediately before you slowly climb a minor hill that drops down onto a beach with loose sand before you go up a little roller and then up the big hill. The descent is not fast, and then you get onto a trail that repeats the previous loop. The finish is on uneven ground.
Elijah Armstrong ran 15:19 on it his junior year and got 6th at Footlocker Nationals. He ran 15:06 on it his senior year and got 3rd. Nathan Green only ever ran 15:10 on it.

Belen Jesuit will be going to Great American XC Festival, in addition to Great Oak and the usual suspects. I think it's going to shape up to be one of the most important meets, data wise, for at larges and gauging regional strength.

Doug Soles’ old team and his current team will both be at Bob Firman.
I sort of wished Herriman went to Desert Twilight just to get an idea how they stack up against Niwot this year, but after seeing their summer and early season results, it will be tough even for Niwot to beat Herriman, so this match up can probably wait until NXR

I think everyone forgets that Niwot was 5th place at NXN with 4 sophomores and 1 freshman and didn't graduate any seniors. They are going to be much faster this year. It's going to be a great match up.

I think the trade off for Firman/Desert Twillight is this:
At Twillight Herriman runs against lots of the same schools they normally will, plus one or two schools that are REALLY good, like top 3-5 in the nation.
At Firman, in addition to a shorter drive and less cost, Herriman runs against 4-5 schools that are top 10-25 in the nation, but no team thats a podium NXN threat.
If they can barely win Desert Twillight it looks bad, if they dominate Desert Twillight it looks good but it's easy to say that Niwot or whoever just had a bad day.
If they barely win Firman, it looks like they had a bad day, but are an incredibly loaded team regardless. If they dominate Firman, they look untouchable.

Both in 2022 and 2023, Herriman took second to AF at NXR SW, but at NXN, Herriman beat them both times.
So it seems that Herriman had enough time in between to fix the mistakes.
The last time Herriman won the XC state title was 2012, when they were in a different state meet race than AF

this is very good. only 4 people ever went under 15:30 on this course (now 6). It's run in Jacksonville Florida so I think it's hard to tell because the humidity can change year to year but I would put this above vandegrift's performance. Belen jesuit feels stronger this year than last year but I am not an expert and am prone to be wrong about these things. We will see what Tully thinks he would know better than me. Belen Jesuit went 1-4-5-6-7-9 on 37 Florida teams with another 37 being in a slower race. There aren't really any good teams (mostly because they like to run low mileage and training in humidity is tough) but to do that in a race with 37 other teams is quite something. I think it will depend whether or not their guys can be consistent and avoid injuries. I know they had a few injury and sickness problems last season so maybe they will know how to navigate through that better this season. They look really really good at the start of the season!
As for Austin vandegrift they went 1-2-3-4-5-7-8 on 27 schools some with incomplete runners. Schools are pretty weak similar quality as Florida schools but still what shows is that some of their guys really leveled up. pretty excited to see where these two teams are able to go this upcoming season. Austin Vandegrift has definitely been overlooked in terms of what their potential is this upcoming season in preseason talk
