Who's getting excited for Chicago this weekend? Looking forward to everyone complaining about the sweltering 60 degree temperatures.
Do we have a list of all the YouTubers doing it? My predictions for the ones I know are there:
Ben Felton - 2:16:24
Rory Linkletr - 2:16:43
Eric Floberg - 2:27:27
Phily - DNS :(
TheMainRunner - 3:04:17
Hoping we see a Tim Grose predictions video for it. He’s extremely good friends with Ben Felton and also FOD who does Abingdon soon so should be some good insight there.
Couple of other Brit YouTubers doing Abingdon. My predictions:
It'd be a big coincidence if it weren't connected to the fall on the trail. But for anyone actually taking care of themselves, I'd bet the fall would've been minor damage quickly healed. Whatever damage it did, her body had no spare resources to repair it.
I'll never understand the mindset runners have of hitting a momentous PR and then drastically changing their training. She wasn't exactly coasting during her training that resulted in a 2:25. So maybe try similar training again and see if you can execute it better? But nooo, it's ALWAYS "ok I'm going to update paces AND add volume AND I found some new non-running thing to implement AND I'm going to mix in new workouts that target my weaknesses" etc.
It's such a blessing to find training that yields a big PR. And then people just throw it away. Must add more!! One training cycle at this volume is the most I could ever have benefitted from it! I couldn't possibly have gotten fitter by staying at this volume for another cycle!
There's no magic rule that a certain volume of training is effective for only one 20 week training cycle. You can do the same training cycle again, for a total of 40 weeks, and continue to see improvements. Just update the paces as you get fitter.
Look, she should definitely be aiming for at least 100-120mpw as a long-term goal. And to get there, she'd have to be bumping up the volume. So I'm not saying to be conservative to a stupid degree. I'd bump volume slightly even if I thought the same volume would continue to yield improvements. But in her rush to qualify for the Olympics, she added too much too soon. She might have gotten away with it, but she didn't. She should've seen LA 2028 as a bonus and set her sights on 2032. Other women have already paved the way to being competitive at that age.
Set her sights in 2032? She's 30 years old! She'll be 37 in 2032.
Look at Keira D’Amato, for one. 2:19, 1:06 at 37+
I don’t think she’s a huge exception. If you train hard all through your 20’s and 30’s then yeah it’s pretty rare to still be competitive at 37+ though there are examples of that too.
A talented runner who builds up intelligently in their late 20’s or early 30’s can definitely plan to peak in mid to late 30’s for the marathon.
I also don’t think Bowden necessarily needed to max out lifetime volume to be competitive for a spot in the 2028 Olympics. She had a few years to improve on the 2:25 without this drastic jump in training load. And then for 2032 her mindset could be maxing out volume in 2029-2030 and maintaining that for a few years and see what that yields

Edit: On another note, her coaching is highly endorsed over on advanced running!

Hadn’t realised Grose and Felton were mates. How random lol.
Anyway I think you’ve massively overestimate Ben and underestimate Rory. You’re looking at sub 2:10 for Rory and maybe sub 2:20 if Ben has the perfect day. The rest don’t look too far off.
+1 for a new Grose marathon predictor video though.

Quite an honest reflection on what went wrong at Berlin by Run The Planet. Looking for a sub 3 marathon that day but the heat just made it impossible for him.
Interesting that he mentions the possibility of selling his own merch and specifically headbands. Always wonder how many of these sorts of things they sell. Like BenIsRunning socks for example. Why would anyone want to wear those? Just seems very random.
Cole's latest video is out and he talks about the lessons (and mistakes) he made at Berlin. Good to be introspective and, after the success of London, probably good for him to get a wake up call. We've probably all done that death march from 18 miles - i certainly have - and it never leaves you.
However, he then proceeds to talk about what he'll do differently for Valencia in 10 weeks.
Im not sure he's learnt anything from Berlin. He's not trained properly for a month, still doesn't have an official diagnosis for his gut issues and isn't conditioned enough like RTJ to just jump back into any major training after running a marathon. I'll be amazed if he even makes the start line and, if he does, it'll be loaded with excuses other than the fact that he should have given the race a swerve in the first place.

His conditioning is night and day if you look back at his old videos pre covid. Why is he running with a running belt when his missus films all his runs from her bike surely she’d be carrying something?

This poster (who I'm guessing is Donato) isn't serious. They incessantly litter this thread with posts about how good Bester and other YouTubers disliked by Letsrun are. It's encouraging to see that they're mostly ignored and downvoted at this point.
Olympics was always a pipe dream, but looks good for YouTube. That’s all her ‘Olympic dream’ is about; the click-bait titles, the ‘I’m a pro taking a big swing’ narrative, and all that associated rubbish is purely for YouTube. She must surely know she’s not going to the Olympics, and never was, so what else can it be for? Seth did the same when talking about the OTQ - the Stans lapped it up, but he must surely have known it was never going to happen, especially with his training.

Yeah, his conditioning is worse now, but I don't think he necessarily wants or needs to get back into that shape. He is still able to run decently under sub-3, which is still faster then the majority of people will ever run.
His brand right now is mainly shoe reviews and running advice, mainly centred around newcomers. A brand new marathon pb doesn't really do anything for him in my opinion. He is over 40 and had a bad ankle break, I don't think he every fully recovered from that setback.

Not that long ago we had all that stuff about his anxiety. He definitely cares about his results.
