Trump won’t have enough political capital to pull off an aggressive deal in his second term. The GOP will abandon him early on as they focus on the next dear leader to replace him. The US is currently seen as the aggressor and unreliable one in China, so Xi has plenty of cover to wait it out. Objectively speaking, the Chinese have a much higher torelant for pain than we do. Don’t forget they just came out of terrible poverty a few decades ago. These people can take suffering and the party doesn’t have to worry about losing control.
Trump didn’t give Xi a good enough option to take back to his party and save face at home, nor did he have the discipline to go through with the difficult and complex process of actually working on a deal like this. So Xi is going to wait it out. Trump is going to be begging for a deal before election, and he will either have to put us in a worse off trade situation and try to get re elected or go home devastated.
Xi is going to be able to claim he took down the POTUS - and we all have trump himself to blame for it.
