Igy is correct to say that 'woke' has gone too far.
did you know doctors and professors have to explain to committees how they have increased diversity in the world, personally? In order to be hired? The crazy way leftists have divided the country up by race is incredibly damaging to the nation's fabric.
I’ve always thought of you, agip, as a voice of reason and intelligence on this thread. But it is obvious that you shares Igy’s definition of “woke” as it has been bastardized by the far right. I urge you to research the origins of word in Black culture. Maybe then you will realize one reason why so many here consider Igy to be a racist and why ‘woke’ can never go too far.
Thanks!
I think it's a mistake to go back and use an old definition of a term as meaningful in the present. If the definition has changed. And the definition of 'woke' has changed. It now represents a basket of tendencies focused on making race extraordinarily important and even the key element in defining who a person is. Judging a person by the color of his skin, if you will.
Also it encompasses the idea that we can pick and choose gender and sex as we please and even in sports sex is a construct.
And probably the idea of not fully prosecuting people for crimes out of some sense of racial sensitivity.
I could go on but race and gender are the main pieces.
Sure the word 'woke' meant something else a while ago. Like 'rock music' in the 50s and even 60s used to encompass what we call soul music and and even doo-wop. 'Rhythm and blues' used to mean one thing and now it means another.
So I'm not too interested in the original meaning of words, other than for historical interest. What matters is what a word means today. And to push back, many, many non far-right people feel that the modern version of 'woke' has gone too far.
Appreciate the kind words tho.

My issue is who exactly gets to define what a word like ‘woke’ means. I’m not okay with the far right taking a word with origins in Black culture and redefining it to suit their agenda. If that’s not racist, I don’t know what is. Why do you think Igy uses it so often?

well we're just arguing semantics here and that's not very interesting, is it?
You think the word means one thing, others think it means another...not much of a discussion.
But no, I don't think it's racist to use a word differently than its origins. Many words have changed definitions and we don't have to call everyone racist for doing that.
This thread has finally, after numerous prior attempts, jumped the shark.
Let me elaborate.
I've been around LRC long enough (~ 2000) to know this place has always been pretty rough around the edges, and I don't think the boards have gotten any worse than they ever were, give or take; this place has always been a bit of a cess pool, with the odd gem inexplicably floating to the top of the muck. This long, long thread has been around a relatively short time in LRC years, but pretty long compared with the average thread. It, like LRC, has always been rough around the edges, with a low signal-to-noise ratio, but like LRC, producing the odd gold nugget. Lately, though, this thread has taken a turn for the (much) worse, and I don't remember the last useful thing I've read on here. For some reason I keep coming back, hoping for another pellet, but there's never much interesting or objectively useful grown up dialog.

It's probably just me.
It is simply the not surprising outgrowth of when investing/speculation (note that we probably cannot even agree on what is investing, in the mind of all users) becomes mired in larger world views, and those sentiments are expressed, as might be expected.
In the expression thereof, posters will disagree, and that not unsurprisingly wanders into the larger realm, not just the specific investment(s).
The larger context is particularly fractious now and differing sides are very heated. And most feel that the need to speak up, the stakes being as important as they are, so it is believed.
tl/dr: when the trading of a stock like GME becomes a sign of the decline of civilization, failure of leadership, and the ruin of any ethical standards, then a forum dedicated to the discussion of investing/speculating will become a very contentious place.
Really taking this to a relative level, how is any of this different than the obese Miss Alabama or transperson Miss Maryland? It is all about the same sick society, in my opinion.
Do you actually care about pagents at all? Who gives a sh!t? I submit to you that ALL pagents from the beginning of time are stupid. Do you care that the Governor of Arkansas (Sarah Sanders) is super fat and looks like a man?

A year ago Drukenmuller was still forecasting a hard landing. Instead, we got a mini-boom. And certainly no more financial crisis like we saw a bit of in 2023. Regional bank ETF is up 10% over the last year...not bad but certainly underperforming by a lot.
Macro is hard.

this is getting on my nerves. quarter of a century. Are we in a new setup where the only stocks that do well are big cap tech? Should we ditch diversification and just buy big tech?
It's not crazy. There's no law of physics that says the stock market is a pendulum. We could be in a new zone of zero or negative population growth, aging of populations, bad politics and slowing globalism and massive profitability of tech that makes tech the only show in town.

I am indifferent. I could not care less. It wouldn't bother me if pagents went the way of the Dodo. And no, I don't think they are sexist. I just think they are stupid beyond belief. So, if a man wins, or a donkey or a 500 pound woman, I just don't give a rat's ass.
Alright, but it does represent the decline in American society, and that was the point to begin with. Like believing the Roaring Kitty thing is investing, or not an aberration, not a blemish on free markets. You are kidding yourself if you believe either is normal. Weird stuff comes to this country daily, and we deserve all of it.
Nah. It's not representative of decline in American society. Pagents are stupid...absolutely stupid, and they always have been. Anything that makes people like you not want to watch a pagent again is a good thing.
