My suggestion is to lock all of the political threads until after the election, and to delete every new thread that troll start. Political threads include those which are similar the UCLA wokeness thread.
For trolls who insist on starting threads give than a one day ban. Warn them that if they try to start a second thread ban them until after the election, and tell them they will receive a lifetime ban for trying a third time.
As 99% of all disgusting posts came from unregistered users, against you can do basically not much, to clean up your forum requires only registered users. It is still anonymous but not so as before. Also that makes ignoring/reading a post easier if you know a user. This here with the unregistered cowards has no personality and will never get any.
Respectfully, I think requiring registration would fundamentally change the character of the site, and probably drive a lot of people away. Make it much more dull, and less honest, and less fun.

I don’t mind the political threads, even if I disagree with a lot of them. LRC has never been only about running.
Besides, I don’t know how to classify a political versus non-political thread. For instance, there’s a long thread going about prayer. Well, religion can certainly have political implications. Do threads like that get banned as well?
Frankly, LRC is one of the last places left where people with different social/political views can interact on a mostly even playing field. I would hate for the site to give in and stop allowing certain everyday topics, just because it’s uncomfortable.

Fundamentally changing the site from a model that actively enables trolling is rather the point of proposing a registration model.
The "honesty" argument for non-registration seems flawed unless the objective is to encourage fundamentally anti-social people to freely express their anti-social tendencies. Honesty absent accountability simply doesn't work.
99% of posts and clicks come from unregistered users. If the Brojos require registration, then the site’s income craters. If they require registration, the they would also have to require subscriptions and we all know how cheap runners, teens, and troll farms are when it comes to that.
One of the key issues never discussed is how much of the anonymous trolling comes from the mods and the brojos themselves, or friends thereof. The clear conflict of interest alone will prevent any of the recurring problems from being usefully addressed.

You’re right, making people register to post would get rid of some trolling, though by no means all. But I’ll be honest, a well-placed troll is a big reason why I come to the site. To be sure, I have learned a lot about training and running here. But you can only talk about cross country nationals and double threshold training so many times. I am unashamed to admit it that this site has made me laugh until my sides hurt. Yeah, I see all sorts of social and political ideas that I disagree with. But whatever, it’s the price I am willing to pay for a relatively free and open exchange of ideas. And funnies.

Hahaha, I doubt it but that does make me laugh. Sort of like a tire store owner spreading nails in the street to drum up some business.
Mikeh, what is the update? I’ve received about 10 complaints today about one moderator deleting innocuous threads. I know you were leading the discussion with Brojos on their succession/RIF plans for the existing moderators, as there is tremendous unrest.

There is a lot of truth to what this poster says.
Anyone who actually believes the mods and site owners never post or start threads to get views as anonymous trolls is simply one naive person.
Mike33, respectfully, you can laugh and post Hahahaha------but I guarantee you that it's true.

kind of obvious. it is how the business model works.

Good luck. The mods are in the business of keeping themselves in power. They will silence anyone that puts them at risk.

The moderators are here are volunteers who have way less power than you think. But let's try this point another, more entertaining way, using this perfect scene from the film "Knocked Up" (that has vulgar language and a couple gay slurs) to give you a sense of what it's probably like to mod here:
