Part of the difficult around team titles at the state meet, which are probably among the hardest sporting titles to win in the state of California, if not the United States, is that strength on paper rarely translates to actual results after going through 5-7 rounds of racing.
Last year, Cathedral was the favorite to win, but late season injuries and the unfortunate 4x400/4x800 event placement meant no first place trophy. You have to have some really damn good individuals to win the title, which is why it's always so interesting.
Here's some history!
- In 2017, Poly girls won the state title with 3 girls - a win in the 100/200, third in the triple and second in the long, and 8th in the 800 for 31 points, 1 point above Carson. It was crazy too, since the Carson team was made up of Long Beach Poly transfers who had left in 2016 after Don Norford retired.
- In 2009, FOUR boys teams tied for the first place trophy with 20 points each. What a mess!
1. Randall Caroll won the 100/200 for Cathedral
2. Reggie Wyatt won the 400/300h for La Sierra
3. Clovis East had someone place 4th in shot, 2nd in discus, and someone else place 2nd in pole vault
4. Matt Darr won the shot put/discus double for Frontier
