My former coworker would be offended with any use of the word black. He prefers African American. He’s proud of his African heritage and wouldn’t want you referring to him by his skin color only.
Fine by me. I use what is most commonly accepted and accurate. Not all black people in America are African Americans. Many of them aren't American at all, and then some of them don't have ancestral origins in Africa. SOOOOO, as a blanket term, I use "black people." If an individual doesn't like that and tells me, I will gladly refer to them as they wish.
Al Sharpton says "black people" is acceptable, and that's good enough for me.

As an addition to my last post. I know a WHITE guy who is now an American citizen, but he was born in and grew up in South Africa, so he could be referred to as an African American. He though prefers the term, "Cracker."
