isn't the average GPA at elite schools up around 3.5 now? I think grade inflation has made grades pretty silly. Esp when everyone knows STEM grades are harder to get than humanities grades.

The problem with grading in graduate school is that if everyone completes an assignment, and meets all the requirements, why would you grade them down (on a curve)? It is ridiculous to do so. As a comparison to undergrad, if 50% of the students score 100%, and the 50% of the students score 95-99%. Do the 95% score deserve a grade of C, and 97% a B, so that the grade average comes out to 3.0? The difference of 5% on a test does not justify a test grade of 2.0 versus a test grade of 4.0.

Grade inflation or grade deflation is specific to each individual university. Boston University has felt the stigma of grade deflation, not grade inflation for years. Currently the average GPA for a BU graduate is 3.04.

AOC is without question a smart person. Boston University doesn't admit people who aren't, unless they are there for athletics, then there is some leeway. The mere fact she is a BU graduate puts her into an upper echelon group. That she was in the top about 25% of her class minimum makes her stand out even more. Yes there are lots of smarter people out there, but she's no dumb dumb.

Yes, in general, STEM may be tougher. But liberal arts majors are probably better suited to serving in congress.

I went to a school where over 90% of students were STEM majors. A lot of students had major problems with subjects like English and literature. To graduate, we had to take an exam to show basic competence in writing. A lot of the students who aced calculus couldn't pass the writing exam on the first try.

Did you know that Yale 10 years ago was considered the least competitive of any school in the nation? Anyone who managed to get in either got A's or B's. Oh yeah, my GPA was considerably higher than what AOC got. I had one B in 5 years. I didn't go to an Ivy league school but it is a top 50 in the world.
