With all of this acrimony between left and right, far worse than any I have seen in my lifetime, it is difficult to see how this USA will ever heal. Those of us on the left will never accept the sort of corporatist government of Trumpism or the tea party vision; obviously, those on the right have rejected the pluralist vision of America. So, where do we go? Increasing political violence with assassination and voter suppression? A break up of the republic into some sort of federation? It is a grim future.

You have to ask yourself how it really got to this point, and who is really at the root of the divide. Remember, this is a global phenomenon. What happened in the US is not really all that unique. Most advanced countries have are having an identity crisis at the moment.

I truly don't think the divide is as inherently vicious as it may seem... among everyday people, anyway. The problem is there are certain interest groups and entire industries that benefit from the divide and conquer strategy. Sadly, most people don't even realize this and end up as subservient pawns in the game.

Don't get discouraged. The vast majority of Americans are somewhere in the middle.

I'm sure I'd be called a liberal, I voted for Hillary, mostly because I can't stand Trump. Still, I have happily voted for local Republicans. I'd probably have voted for Kasich over Hillary as well, had I been given the chance. Sure, there are diehards who always vote for the same party regardless, but I believe they only represent 25-30% of the population. Of course, if those are the only people who show up to vote, then yeah, we get more partisanship. And, the incredible gerrymandering in some states doesn't help that either. So we have to deal with that.

You make good points. I hope you are right. What haunts me are works like Norman Angell (1872 - 1967). In 1909 he published an essay in which he argued that a general war in Europe would never happen again because the economies of major nations were so well integrated, and the potential costs of a war too high. He and nearly everyone else failed to predict that those same nations would be willing to sacrifice 15 million lives and the health of their economies in a senseless slaughter. The result was the Great Depression and another even more destructive war. So, I hope you are right about this common ground in the US, I really do--but I never cease to be astounded at the self-destructive power of human beings.

I think being able to stay out of politics is at the core of the American soul. That's why we are so ignorant, that's why so few of us vote. We believe that politics is not anywhere near central to our lives. In our hearts we just work and spend, away from politics.

the problem is that we can only do that because we have traditionally elected normal politicians. Who stay within the 40 yard lines. The question is if one guy, trump, who is somewhere around the 20 yard line, can ruin it all for us and force us all to be political.

I don't know what the answer is. I'm still hoping he turns into a normal politician. who I might disagree with, but who I don't have to worry will upset the entire postwar order on planet earth.

All of the big news is the debates on issues and people getting angry but there are very few actions that actually affect people on the day to day basis.

The travel ban is low impact.

The healthcare law is serious, though because millions are affected over time.

That is where people are more concerned with political points than helping the country.

Trump will sign anything they put in front of him.

Give him a bill for full Healthcare repeal or a complete government single payer plan and he will sign either one for the photo op.
