The economy is almost always a major determining factor; more so in a midterm. Exit polls indicated abortion was very high on the list of voters' priorities, but those polls are even more flawed because they don't take into account the early vote and mail in ballots.

I think the GOP underestimates just how toxic Trump and his followers are. There's a reason every major religion has a story about making a deal with devil. It always looks like you're able to get what you want without adhering to God's code (just think about how many evangelicals were shouting "BUT GORSUCH!!"). Somehow, in the end, that kind of a gamble always ends with you losing your soul. Despite all the factors aligning in a way that should guarantee a complete GOP sweep, the toxicity of Trump and his followers them a ton.

Now they have to deal with a wounded Trump, while trying to coalesce around a "normal" Republican. Trump, and his base, are going to go all out on destroying the Republican party for the next 2 years. They made the deal, and now they've lost their soul. To paraphrase Reagan, "we didn't leave the GOP. The GOP left us".

The drop for both is not too unusual for a midterm.
But the GOP share… That’s only 52.5%. Pretty pitiful for a party supposedly excited about bringing the heat on those in power.

”Popular vote tallies” are what the losing side / underperforming side always does. Remember how many times we were reminded that “Hillary won the popular vote”? No one cares. We don’t have national elections. This isn’t a parliament.

It'll end up pretty close when everything is counted.

I'm saying that Team Blue, to enhance its victory laps, is overstating how bad the economy is, not in the structural sense (the economy is in a very scary place, structurally) but in the sense of how the voters perceive their own economic well-being.

The economic pain sort of starts at the top and works its way down over time. We're only in the 1st inning of this economic cycle.

In some upcoming election, once everyone is poor, Team Red can revive its Greatest Hits album: Lower Taxes, De-Regulation, etc. The votes will come.

I’m against it too but couple of successful old fashioned hardball political moves out of the Dems here…the debt forgiveness to get the kiddos to vote and this. Both seemed to have worked.

So after 2 years of massively overstating how bad the economy is, Republicans now want to blame the democrats for...overstating how bad the economy is. It must be nice to live in a world without any self-awareness.

Also, you really think voters will support lower taxes and deregulation after an economic meltdown? You might want to revisit history.
