I think that lesson is something that ends up as the downfall of a lot of these Shoetubers types, especially those who came to running late. They start that upward trend and uncover that they have some talent to go beyond the usual realm of the beginners. For the guys it's that sweet spot between 2:30 and down to 2:20. So suddenly they start to aspire to something bigger than just running a good race and get a little high on their own supply when they get to share it across social media platforms.
But, again, they're usually a little naive. I'm not sure this applies to Philly specifically because I believe she did run in college and face some challenges there, but I think a lot of other run-fluencers do succumb to this. Instead of having these kinds of frustrations and challenges early on (say in high school not qualifying for state or having to walk on some college team or whatever) they start having them as a fully matured adult with a big audience, usually after they've started to feel like they know what they're doing. What annoys me most though is that they always talk like they know better, even when it's clear they're naive or struggling to get out of their own way. They'll sell training plans, make videos on new training methods, and shill products that will help them ace that next race. Only for it to "just not be their day."
One of the my favorite things about running and what I think makes it such a tough sport is that there is no hiding from it. If you have a bad day, there's not much that can save you and any excuse just feels weak. It happens to everyone but there's a way to respond to it that is most telling. I feel like most runfluencers and Shoetubers would much rather hide from the potential exposure of racing and just post highly controlled training videos to maintain the best facade they can.
Phily’s been running since she was roughly 10 years old, been through the UK club system, then went to uni in the UK, then the NCAA, only then did she start getting into social media upon her return. She’s certainly earned her stripes as a runner, yet as we see too often, once you enter the world of an influencer, you soon can become so caught up in your own bubble you forget what got you there in the first place.
That, and adding in a sprinkle of “I’m an aspiring professional athlete, I must operate at the highest level and scrutinise every element of my running and life”, is a disaster waiting to happen.
I thought that awkward repartee with Linkletter was revealing.
She had a spikey dig about his fame, clearly considering herself more "famous" than him.
Says proclaims she's not interested in any of that, purely focused on training.
If that were true you would'nt be a YouTuber.
Also, er, no. He's a 2:07 elite. That makes him more famous in the running world than a Youtuber.
Taking a step back from her Youtube persona, she is a fantastic runner. One of the best females in the UK. But you really need to be top 3-5 to achieve what she wants to achieve. I just don't see it in her. She can still find success in running, potentially representing GB if the top marathoners decide not to run (like Julian Spence/Moose from Inside Running did for Australia), but I don't think her Olympic ambitions are realistic. Maybe she will prove me wrong, but she seems to have set that as the expectation and won't be able to enjoy the small wins/successes along the way.

She needs to either focus on YouTube or on chasing the Olympics... Currently she's not doing very well at either. She needs to pick a lane.
"YouTuber Griff Duncan" here. I ran a 3:05 6 weeks later. And no, I never tried to rewrite the rules because it was "boring." Also, "a few weeks of training" was a 16 week build... Keep following along and watching instead of doing things yourself.
bore off grandad, ive never heard of you.
do some training, post a respectable PB and i may consider watching your channel. goodbye
ive got a spare 90 minute window tonight, what punks do i need to catch up on or is my time better utilised by have a couple of violent bashes of the bishop

Save your energy, mate. You’ve tugged that thing so much it’s basically a baby carrot at this point.
Two interesting, probably unrelated observations on Bester/his runners. Posts a story about getting in to his SIS media day thing at gone midnight, but up and prepped for a workout at 0600 - so getting maybe 5 hours sleep probably less. Says 'no excuses', like my brother in Christ spending a day travelling and getting no sleep is the perfect excuse to shift a workout, you don't have any other commitments just move your week around better.
Unrelated to his 'no excuses' attitude he's shared a story from one of his disciples at the big half, man's knees covered in tape like they've swaddled the baby Jesus. Turns out a lot of his race day photos in BA kit features similar tape setups.

Gotta say bud pretty poor form how you repeatedly fail to caveat that your marathon was massively downhill
Yup, ran a super downhill race and didn't even mention it. So glad the BAA put a limit on these races.
Sitting in a darkened room with Stephen Scullion. Locked away. Forgotten. Soon to be joined by Cole, Felton and Broberg when they blow up and cause themselves irreproachable damage and have to retire from YouTube
Scullion, in the corner, rocking back and forth repeating "2:09, 2:09, 2:09"

I'm tired too of Youtubers not respecting the marathon distance and not having a clue what their marathon pace is. That sub 3 clickbait is just more appealing to post about. Running a 3:12 and then 6 weeks later a 3:05 (albeit downhill) while still trying to go out at close to sub 3 pace and fading the last 10k according to your splits, shows that you need to understand the training more. Could you go from a 3:12 to sub 3 by the end of the year? Sure. But lets be realistic and train at paces that indicate a 3:05-3:10 range which might be a better goal. I'm not saying don't have big goals, you just need to train smarter.

And reading between the lines, Cole initially went to an NHS doctor for his stomach issues. So he’s relying on GPs, who are very stretched and although are amazing, are not equipped to do anything about this issue in a timely manner. Cole mentioned on Strava that he was disappointed with the outcome of the appointment (I’m paraphrasing), and is now working with a nutritionist from early October, which he will presumably be footing the bill for. Mantz and Young have much better (almost immediate) access to people who know what they’re doing regarding food, physio, etc etc.
Yea this is what the NHS is worst at. Not immediately life-threatening, no obvious cause at first glance. It's frustrating, I feel for him

I wonder if the GP said “Have you tried not running 140 miles a week?”.
Maybe seek private healthcare if you want to train like a pro athlete or even harder than one for that matter. I’m sure he’s not soiling himself multiple times a day when not running.

This is one of the things some of these guys don't understand. The real professional runners simply run and recover. They have someone telling them when to eat and what to eat. They have massages every day. They are not just running a lot they are recovering a lot
12 minutes seems a long time for a poo, he'll need to improve that if he ever considers a career in ultra running.
I can't wait for Jake to start ultra running - not that I even watch it. I think he's way more talented than most top ultra runners. Jim Walmsley's marathon PR is slower than Jakes. I feel like he occupies a space where he's not quite talented enough to compete internationally in the marathon but with his story telling and personality could make real waves in the ultra world!
Finally got round to watching Philly's latest video.
I felt she was unkind to Daniel. His life is essentially supporting and documenting her running. It doesn't seem like he gets to pursue much else at all.
He cheers her on during a training run. She quite aggressively tells him it was too much cheering and negative to her session
Pretty thoughtless and a bit hurtful to put that in. I'm sure he was just trying to do his "job".
They both are clearly reading this thread. Just posted a reel on insta showing her “appreciation” for Daniel. And also justifying her behavior
It’s legit insanity that Philly reads this thread and then actions on her social media accordingly. lol we’ve seen it multiple times now. It must be a stressful life she lives mentally lol. I’d be miserable. Worrying so much about running since it’s your online persona and financial livelihood and paranoid about critiques and what people think 24/7. No hate but it honestly seems wildly sad. She would be better off doing less social media and just actually focusing more on running at a highest level. Sadly she won’t do that since she has to continue to be the runfluencer she is and keep up with her style of filming and editing for all her brainwashed fans
