They treated kids horribly. After public fury, they kids were moved out. Now the Trump admin insists the kids have to go back with no added resources. Why do the kids have to go back? because of the twin trump governing theses: 1) fight on everything and 2) the cruelty is the point. The cruelty is the point. Alleviating cruelty is fundamentally anti-republican, a Democratic strategy.

part two is that if you are a republican and you have this kind of intentional cruelty in your party's platform, yeah you're going to make the election a referendum about guns, abortion and 'socialism.'

Expect a ton of really stupid 'democrats are socialists who want to kill babies and take your guns away' arguments. Those wedge arguments might be the only arguments we hear.

I’ve actually become less optimistic about Trump losing.

There is no way he’s grown his slice of the pie, so I think he’s capped at 45/46% of the general vote. His supporters are definitely die hard though, they are going to vote and there are just way too many clueless Americans who will vote for him just on the belief that the economy is doing great. A lot of these people don’t tune into any current events or news, so no the Mueller report was not damaging.

While he won’t be able to get as many votes as in 2016, it is entirely possible, and to me seeming more and more probable, that he can win on a bad turnout. No Dem is going to beat him in the Twitter game, and that’s unfortunately a massive advantage, especially for a sitting president. Most importantly, Trump supporters value his apparent genuine persona over results and morals/values. They don’t care if he turns out to be a criminal or rapist, most important is that he doesn’t come off like a politician. Nobody else can offer that and I think there are many dems looking for something genuine in their party but short of maybe Sanders won’t find it.

I hope I’m wrong but the short term memory of my fellow Americans is very discouraging... I just don’t know if the Dem turnout will be enough.

I hear you. But the evidence of 2018 and special elections has been that Dems are willing to crawl over broken glass to vote out trumpers. Motivation has been showed to be very high among Dems. Sure motivation among Rs is high too, but not as high, and there are a lot more Ds than Rs.

The good news is that Trump's approval ratings roughly match his vote total - in the low 40s. Unless there is a third party candidate that takes votes away from the Dems...hard to see trump getting above that low 40s number. He's not even trying, really.

And a two party matchup with trump getting 43% would be an electoral college wipeout.

My fear is that the D lefties will nominate someone the African Americans just can't relate to, resulting in a low turnout among AAs in swing states. For that reason, the Ds absolutely have to have an AA on the ticket one way or the other.

We seem to be in the trap where the conversation has shifted to the election which is still a year and a half away.

And that's where Pelosi was on Jan 3rd.

The window to impeach has already closed.

There is nothing new that come up on Trump that anyone would care about.

His election campaign will be that the Democrats tried find dirt on him and found nothing - and that will work.

He did it. He got away with all of it.

This is my last week posting on this thread (since I said he would resign by June 2019) and I don't think I have anything more to discuss about the Donald Trump presidency.

I'll comment on a 2020 candidates debate thread when it's up but I am not really much interested in next year's campaign yet.

Ah, maybe this is where the disconnect is. You read my posts as prescriptive, when they are merely descriptive. If you can't see the similar dynamic, just as you couldn't see H. Clinton's defeat coming in pretty much exactly the way it did, that is on you. I'm not telling anybody what they should do or who they should like.

I do state that one of the consequences of nominating somebody like Biden is that you increase the chances of 4 more years of Trump. Again, that is descriptive, so if that is what you want, keep on supporting him.

I'm torn between applauding anyone who quits social media at any level and wishing you'd stay.

If I were aware of any data that supported your conclusion, I'd be sympathetic.

His 46% from 2016 were not all hardcore trumpers. He had more than just his base.

There are enough moderate Republicans who will sit and enough swing voters upset at the tariffs and Mueller that will spell his defeat.

African American turnout spiked in 2008 and 2012 because Obama. In 2016 it returned to the same % as it was in 2004, 2000, 1996, 1992, 1988......

While total African American population has remained steady it is the Hispanic population that has increased dramatically.

The African American vote is constant. The Hispanic vote is more important in the long term.
