MAGA wants to place armed ICE agents at midterm polling places. Let's think through this.
1. There are around 94,000 polling places in the United States, so that's a lot of ground to cover. The logistics and deployment will probably need to be on a scale similar to the invasion of Iraq, even if MAGA targets only certain voting districts.
2. It's possible that putting MAGA agents at the polls will make Democrats, Independents, and Libertarians MORE determined to vote instead of scaring them away. Even some non-political people might feel swayed to stick up for themselves at the polls.
3. Maybe a lot of ICE agents will be scheduling colonoscopies for November 3, 2026. That would surely be preferable to the stress of being stationed at a polling place on Election Day.
4. There are people in this country who are legitimately unhappy with MAGA and want to send a message through their vote. Is MAGA saying that Americans will no longer have that option? We're stuck with MAGA no matter what? If the economy struggles, we are stuck with MAGA? If the president is unpopular, we're stuck with MAGA?
5. These drastic actions might work if MAGA was wildly successful, but MAGA sucks. Prices never went down like we thought they would, and government agents are smashing private property, which is never acceptable. MAGA isn't even good at intimidation. There are more protesters now than ever. If you're trying to run a country based on intimidation and nobody is intimidated, then you suck and you deserve to lose the midterms.
6. MAGA has been playing the "we're not authoritarians" game for a long time. But introducing armed agents to polling places will end that charade once and for all. The mask will be pulled off even for the people who don't pay attention to government. Is MAGA fully ready for that moment? Well, judging by what's going on in Minneapolis, the answer is no. Not even close. If MAGA can't keep the 46th most populated city in line, what chance does it have for the entirety of America? There is no aura of invincibility whatsoever, and that's a dangerous place for MAGA to be. This has been forced into the open much, much sooner than MAGA was ready for.
7. Messing with the midterms will trigger an economic strike. People aren't fully motivated to do that now, but the loss of their vote will convince them. Maybe that won't have much impact, but it could. We'll find out.
