She called it Kiev. I don't know why. She even Americanized her own name to fit in which I thought did not suit her because her real name was beautiful.
I'll tell what I know about her story because it might explain why the people from Ukraine are so tough.
From what I remembered from her grandparents on her mother's side was that when her grandfather went off to war in WW2 he made her grandmother promise to take the kids, leave the house, and travel east if the Germans attacked.
When this happened he was away at war (I believe he never returned) and her relatives had said that she was being ridiculous for leaving. She agreed with them but she had promised her husband so she fled with really no posessions or any connections. Sadly, everyone she left behind in her family was killed as they were a Jewish family. This is not something that just goes away with time and even know this girl had not been born yet she grew up knowing that everyone in her extended family had been killed in the concentration camps.
When the Afganistan War started nobody was allowed to leave and her brother was going to be drafted. Her father was a member of the communist party as a method of providing for his family. The average family had a lot of trouble getting basic items in then 70's according to them. He applied for a pilgrimage to Israel which was odd also because they were technically not allowed to practice religion but the USSR was not completely able to shut that down.
When they left for Israel which they never actually landed there, they switched to a connecting flight to New York. They were taken in by members of her father's family and other immigrants who were able to help them get started.
She was a competitive figure skater when she came over. She was my first love and we were together for a while but it didn't last. We were too young. I was 17, she was 16 and then college, etc...
Honestly, I have not thought about her for years but over the past month watching this I have thought of her every day.

I'll tell you...regardless of how this turns out, it will be remembered by big nations as a giant red flag not to start a war against a modern army. These portable missiles and drones are giant equalizers.
Although I hear US armor has some anti-missile tech that could help defend them in a similar situation. I assume that tech will eventually find its way to lesser armies.
