I think 6 minutes is a reasonable standard. It basically just ensures that people are actually running over the summer and not just showing up for the first day of practice completely out of shape.
As my coach used to tell us, the XC season is half way over by the time of the first official practice. The real meaningful training takes place over the summer. If you've put in the mileage in June and July, running a 6 minute mile in August shouldn't be too tough even if you aren't the most talented kid on the team.
What the hell? I been running 20 MPW over the summer for June and July, and couldn't break 7 in August
Well, you personally needed to do more to hit the standard and you didn't.
It will always be the case that some people need to work harder than others to succeed. Some of my med school classmates can procrastinate, bang through one quick pass of the material the week before the exam, and still ace every test. If I tried to do this, I'd fail.
Some kids can go out and jog 20 mpw over the summer and still be competitive. You can't. Just like I need to study more than some of my friends if I want to do well in class, you need to run more if you want to succeed in XC. Just go do it. Or don't. But either way quit whining about it.
