I'd take Webb over ElG in a 400 any day of the week. Remember that ElG is nearly 20sec faster than Webb over 5k. I'm sure when Webb ran his 27:30 odd 10K last year he was no where near 47 shape.

The McMillan Running Calculator say somewhere are 1:36 to 1:38 for the 800m. That's probably real!
that is ridiculous. the 800 is much more difficult to run. it is not even close
I've run 200, 400, and 800 in one meet. It's all in the person who's running it.

He could break the world record if he trained for it. He has the build of a 400/800 runner and not the pure speed of a 200 runner. after he breaks the wr in the 400 he should focus on breaking the 800 record.
I think you all are idiots. Of course Wariner could run a great 800m. Probably couldn't beat KD or Symmonds without training but he'd be close. But the question is, why would he want to run an 8 when he is already the best in the world at the 4.. and in hot pursuit of a WR..?

ok really? theres no way you can say that an 400 runner is in oxygen debt (or depth? not sure if you meant something different) more than an 800 runner. The last 4-500 meters of the 8 are anaerobic, as in your muscles don't have enough oxygen to get fuel. In other words, 800 guys run a fast 400, then one more full 400 in oxygen debt, where as the 4 guys dont lock up until the last 100-150 meters. The 4 is tough, definitely. But the 8 is hands down worse.

i think most people agree, wariner is "shaped" more like a mid distance runner than a "true" sprinter, but then again Juantorena didnt look like a mid distance runner.
the womens 800 WR was set by a juiced to the gills czk or where ever the hell she was from, and was at one time the womens WR holder in the 400, with 47.99 i believe.
Juantorena had i think 44 low all out speed, Yury has 45 mid speed, seb split 45 lows and 46 low in the open. i dont think jeremy would have to change his current training very much to be in the 144-145 range. since most of his training is speed-endurance, workouts very similar to 800 training, lots of 200's with minmal rest in about 25-26.

Do you think he would even be able to make Columbia's 4x8 team? I'd say he could break 2:00 if he was pushing it, but not by too much.
The 800 used to be made up of mostly endurance/distance trained types with speed, that put in high mileage in training (fast milers moving down). There have been some exceptions in the past like Alberto Juantorena. The 400/800 types are becoming more common. There have been some strong 400m runners move up with success. There are also 800 runners that drop down to 400 and do quite well. Such as Hazel Clark. The 800m is 60%-40% aerobic/anaerobic. However the aerobic capactiy can be developed greatly with training, as can fast twitch type II fibers convert to type IIa fibers and take on more oxidative properties. Raw speed on the other hand can't improve nearly as much as endurance and aerobic capacity. Wariner is a 400 runner that is very light weight compared to others and has a very efficient stride, both of wich are more conducive to running the 800 than the more muscular and compact traditional 400 runners. He also has less raw speed and a slower start than most 400 runners at his level, with a PR of 20.19. LaShawn Merrit has run in the 19.8's for 200m. Having said all of this I believe there is no reason why, if he trains properly, Wariner should be able to run at least back to back 52.5-53's equaling around 1:45 800 range and possibly faster if he is tough (which is around what the top american guys do-nick symmonds may go down to 1:44)
