People also forget about Bryn Brown--she had a reasonable chance of some national title if not for an injury. She has broken 10:00 3200 m already outdoors. There are 3 girls running 2:03 who are underclassmen--there is a good chance at least one could run sub 4:30 in the mile or the metric equivalent. I agree that Touhy was an amazing cross country runner last season but I am not sure why people put her on this special status and called GOAT. She wins often is track but people forget about her losses as well and limited range. Personally I think Starliper and Dudek are probably somewhat more talented runners but I know it is taboo to even suggest this as a possibility on the msg board. People need to realize that she is closer to max out her abilities than others because of high mileage/intensity from an early age. We will see how things play out at the collegiate level and that should help settle the issue.
Interesting. They are all good runners. I am trying to think of Tuohy's "losses" and I have come up with one so far since she was a freshman - the Millrose mile 2 years ago. Perhaps a stray 1000 or 600 somewhere? But the others have lost as well, in the mile/2 mile.
On her range, I am not sure either Starliper or Dudek have really showed any more range thus far.
Who will be best down the road? I wish I knew. I think all of the XC course records and HS track records might have led to the "GOAT" label. But Mary cain of course ran faster, just not as an official HS Student.
I pretty much agree, while I think Dudek put up a good case to being somewhat close at the end of XC or into Indoors, I think it's fair to say that Tuohy is number 1 and also has to be in GOAT conversation just because of what she has accomplished in her career.
My stance has always been, not to take anything away from her accomplishments but that maybe pushing to achieve them is what will inevitably cause her decline or impede her in being as successful as she once could have been. Several disagree with my thoughts and time is the only thing that will tell.
As mentioned I do think it's better she run races a few different ways and the fact that she did close fast is a good physical and mental sign. Also great prep heading into college as she will be in those situations much more and running against people that will be closing very fast off of solid paces.
