Maybe just run and see what you can do. Remember all things pass. None of us can manage to hold on to anything. In that way we live our lives. There are more important things than your crappy time like comprehending the depths of night. Who cares?

You must have worked hard to qualify. Enjoy the experience, it can be one of your proudest moments. Good luck and have fun!e
This thread is great.
1) We should definitely do an interview with you after the Trials. Don't reveal who you are now.
2) Actually maybe we should interview you beforehand but not know who you are. If you're interested. Email me from a fake email address
and tell me where you first posted for and we could do this.
3) Good luck.
PS I need to find the LetsRun singlet in case someone wants to wear it.
If it were me, I would want to go with the leaders and after about 5 miles or so just throw down an insane 15 second surge and just pedal to the metal until the 10 mile mark, when I would put the plan into action:
Step 1. hire a friend to be a rabid fan dressed in a priest costume to run at me and push me off of the course
Step 2. blame him for me eventually imploding and finishing well behind the leaders
Step 3. prophet
Go out with the 2:18 pace group and enjoy the ride.
think of your 52 year old self and ask yourself what memories he would like to have of this race.
most likely, if you are like most runners, you'd like to have the feeling that you gave it your best shot and got the most out of your body. Which would suggest treating it like any other race and just do your regular thing. What got you this far.
Your only real option is to to run the 'Thon on "Pure Hate."
It can take many years to perfect this method, but there is the possibility if you are in the right state of mind to obtain significant and enhanced performance gain on short notice.
Here's one suggestion for a last minute "Pure Hate" 'Thon race strategy.
Wear M.A.G.A. hat at start to throw off fellow competitors who are liberal.
Miles 0-6 : Visualize the devastating impacts of a Bernie Sanders presidency would have on this great country. Think about all the failed socialist and communist regimes that have oppressed their gullible followers only to lead them to misery and suffering.
Miles 7-15 : Rerun in your head all the vicious and unrelenting attacks our wonderful President Trump has had to endure during the last three years by the corrupt media and their traitorous Democratic co-conspirators. Think about his ability to endure and fightback from these assaults to propel you faster and stronger.
Miles 16-20: Visualize the faces of Comey, Schiff, Shumer, and other loathsome politicians to elevate your hidden levels of disdain and disgust to turn their negativity into positive efficiency in your stride rate.
Miles 21-24: If Jared Ward is still in mix at this point, think of the smiling Mitt Romney who stabbed our wonderful President Trump in the back for his own outrageous bruised ego to boost your levels of contempt and fervor to increase your mitochondria's energy function.
Miles 25 to the finish: Picture yourself training on lonely road and being passed by an angry looking millennial woman with various bumper stickers plastered on the back of her Tesla saying: RESIST, HILLARY 2016, WARREN 2020, COEXIST, NO WAR, FEEL THE BERN ...
You are wearing a M.A.G.A. hat and slows down and gives you the finger. The only thing to do is to summon up all your "Pure Hate" for what she and her ilk stand for and is to run faster than you have ever imagined possible, transcending the limits of your genetics, training, and physical limits propelling you to unimaginable victory.
After winning, You Thank God, Your Family, and The founders and protectors of the Constitution of this Great Country for ability to Run FREE!!!!

or...run controlled for 18-20 miles and then take some chances - see if you can get a magic day and pick up a ton of spots in the last 30-40 minutes. Like try to PR at 10k. See what Flanagan did when she won NYC.
There's gonna be a ton of carnage on a hilly course and with people taking the 'hang on as long as I can route' - you have a great day you could pass a lot of people steaming along at 5 minute pace.

OP: don't do it.
Have you considered smoking a lot of weed and then running 3.5 hrs? Some idiot did that 4 years ago.

This is correct. In the Olympic trials, a 2:18 marathoner has only one option.

It's not a real guy that will be running in the trials. It's a funny hypothetical scenario though up by someone else.
OP,
Are you really a 2:18 guy or are you a 2:22 guy who has Vaporflys. If you are the former, let me purchase you a pair of Vaporflys and then let's have some fun in the lead pack.
Someone texted me last week about borrowing the letsrun singlet? Was that you? I forgot to write back.

Some possibilities I came up with:
- try to hang on with the leaders as long as possible, have a 0.01% chance that I finish top 3, but very likely I will blow up
- run according to my current estimated fitness and try to place as high as possible
- start sprinting immediately when the gun goes off, lead the race for the first couple of miles, get a ton of TV attention and then blow up
- be the personal pacer for Rupp for the first let's say 10 miles, keep him out off the wind, hand him bottles etc. I guess he would at least give me his shirt afterwards to thank me
I like option 2, run your race and see where you are at 20 or so. As has been suggested, thee will be carnage and passing all the folks coming back is a motivator. This was my strategy in 1984, running 2:16 - 2:18 ace in Niagra (2:18.45 qualifier - see Racing Shadows, Amazon) unfortunately, it wasn't my day and I crashed and burned about 16 miles, but it was epic. Wish you luck in your endeavour and would definitely wear the Letsrun Singlet if available. LOL - love it there is only one.

However, I hope that you can find a real guy who is inspired by this thread to actually go lead the pack as long as they can possibly hold on.

This is EXACTLY what nearly everyone at the trials should be doing. It's not a TT, it's likely a once-in-a-lifetime thing. Run the best race you can. It's going to go out slow, be there. Run as intelligently as you can once it ramps up.
Most of the 2:18 guys take themselves too seriously. Many are former 30:30 D3 guys who have dedicated their lives to this. They are sleeping 9 hours and eating right and training right and they have inspirational reminders around the house. But none of the 2:18 guys are going to get any attention and nobody is going to care if they run 2:17:30 that day. I would rather look back 20 years from now and say that I was leading at the 10 mile mark. The DNF or the 2:17:30 are irrelevant.
