One last time, please explain to us how the cameras lie, walkers never lift between judges, & never pack to hide each other. We need one last dose of irony if you can provide this.

This isn't aimed at me and no, I'm not a big supporter of the event but for the record
1. The rules say TO THE NAKED EYE. If a walker knows what they are doing, the key is to make sure you BARELY maintain contact and completely roll off your foot. The faster you are going, the greater the odds that you will "catch" a little air. Its just mechanics, not neccesarily an attempt to "cheat." (Sort of like how triple jumpers sometimes follow) If its brief enough, you can't see it with out aid, but its going to show up in pictures.
2. Perhaps I shouldn't admit this BUT:
I had a calf injury a couple years ago and since I detest aqua jogging and can't always get to the gym daily, a friend of mine taught me how to racewalk. Begruddingly at first, but I did it. And despite feeling stupid, I liked it better than the elpitical and realized that it doesn't feel as weird as it looks. (And for me, actually helped me a bit when I was back to running because I'd always been too much of a heel striker and the practice getting up on my toes translated into my running)
Now, through my own personal experience - Its just a different feeling. I don't think you can neccesarily decide "I am going to LIFT AT THIS MOMENT" because every thing you do seems to affect the rest of your forward motion.
I also watched a couple races - from start to finish - as a result of knowing someone who competed in the event. While I am sure people probably bunch up and not concentrate on what they are doing, I really can't see it as an attempt to "cheat" b/c if you are going to break form, doing it blatantly for a few strides just doesn't give you that much of an advantage.
I'm not saying everyone should run out and try the event. (nor should you try to ice dance or try synchro for that matter) Hell, I'm not even suggesting that you should WATCH it if you find it that boring/absurd. I'm just saying that before you critisize it, you might want to have a better grasp of what it is you are mocking.
