Many of these kids take running seriously and spend several years working hard with the goal of making it to the State Meet. It can also possibly influence their ability to receive a scholarship at a college.
I don't know all of the legal/IHSA/teacher union issues in Chicago, but it seems like this was up to the IHSA to decide that the kids could not compete if teachers unions were striking anyplace in Illinois that affected their particular schools. I think this was a travesty to just dismiss the efforts of these kids over many years.
Since a judge (an apparently other judges for other sports and other teams in Illinois) has decided that they could compete despite the IHSA position, does this mean that the IHSA will change their policy? I hope so.
I congratulate the teams and individuals that will advance to the State Meet despite the chaos and uncertainty that Unions/IHSA/school administrators created for these kids.
Good luck and best wishes to these runners who made the State Meet based on your perseverance despite the foolishness of so called adults.
