Here's where the request comes in based on religion or other reasons to alter the uniform.
"5. Exceptions
A competitor who requires an exception to the uniform rules because of religious restrictions or
otherwise, must submit a request for a variance from the OHSAA via e-mail (
dgabor@ohsaa.org). If the
variance is granted, a written, signed approval of the variance must be presented to the referee
prior to competition."
All they had to do was submit the request and show an official before the meet in question. Smaller meet hosts don't generally give a crap, but once you enter the state series, all bets are off. The coach, school's AD, and the athlete all dropped the ball on this one.
On the other hand, Ohio should update its rules to make religious restrictions unnecessary to submit a formal request, as more and more diversity amongst athletes is inevitable (and a good thing). Until then, read the manual, follow the rules, and she can compete.
Does this mean that, as a coach, your must comb the rule book with a fine toothed comb to find any and all rules that might cause a violation, including their unclear interpretations?

These people clearly need to find something in their lives to get annoyed about. What people choose to wear on their heads really shouldn't be a big deal.
I think we should be open and welcoming to all in running. A town near where I live has a muslim population of about 12%, but in every race I've ever run there or nearby, the proportion of muslim runners is less than 1%. We should be encouraging girls like this to participate - it might just help to build more understanding between cultures.

The real world values and practices of Islam are not compatible with the values of the USA. If Islamic values where enforced here in the USA just consider what would not be allowed. We will not let our country be ruined in the way Europe has done.

That's a 4%Hijab. One of the other coaches complained that it confers an unfair advantage.
All she needs to do was sign a waiver. Why did everyone throw a hissy fit over a waiver that protects the 1st amendment. The waiver was created for people like her to religuous freedom. How do they not understand what legal documentation is?

This didn't have to be a national story. All the official had to do was take the coach aside and explain that he had to submit the waiver at the next meet. End of story and controversy. In this day and age a person would have to be living in a bubble not to know that the hijab is a Muslim custom and like that of other religions should be respected. For the past 20 years or so I've seen high school runners wearing one with no problem. Common sense would be a warning to have the waiver in hand at the next meet!

HS xc uniform rules are over the top. The only rule should be that your team you run for is identifiable on the front and back of the jersey. Isn't that all that matters when it comes to the actual race? If an entire team wore hijabs, the girls running against them wouldn't be able to tell who's who and, in a team competition like hs xc, this would be an advantage.
Unlike other religious items, a hijab, to great degree, masks the identity of a runner from behind.
Unlike track, the pace and rhythm of an xc race is frequently set by those around/ahead of you. In large hs xc meets, runners are always squaring up against the guys/gals theyve seen and raced against at dual/league meets. Runners with hijabs distort this element of the sport.
Sure, this is one girl (and maybe a few dozen total in the US in hs xc),I'm just saying.

Needing an exemption to race in a hijab is outright discrimination! This is absolutely ridiculous! There is no good reason to have a rule like this!! There is really no substantial difference between wearing a toque or balaclava on a cold day than wearing a hijab, given the hijab is tucked in so it can't get caught on or interfere with others.
