I think people are reacting more to second part of the headline. Chelimo failing to qualify is news. The fact that people who don't qualify cannot run is not news, nor is it as shocking as the OP seems to think.

Explaining WHY something happens or happened is NOT rebutting the apparently offending claim. In fact, it arguably confirms it. Diamond does not suggest that what 'they fought poorly' claims is false. Why didn't Native Americans invade Europe a thousand years before Leif Erikson made it over here? They could have subjected and colonized at will, couldn't they? Diamond explains why.
