With windy conditions in Stockholm tonight only 4 people hit the automatic qualifying standard for the World Champs of 27:40. And the IAAF has said in the 10,000m they will not fill the field with athletes who don't have the standard.
Tonight's run means Paul Chelimo will not be able to do the 5,000/10,000 double as he won't be in the race unless he gets the standard somewhere else.
Julian Wanders who had a nice run and set a national record in 6th won't be going either.
As it currently stands Worlds will comprise 19 athletes in the men's 10,000m plus possibly a few more.
3 each from these countries: Kenyan, Ethiopian, Uganda, Burundi (who got 3 men at top 15 at World Cross) who all will have presumably qualified this year.
Eritrea's Aron Kifle also qualified tonight and at World Cross.
And then you'll have 6 athletes who qualified last year:
Canadian (Mo Ahmed), Kiwi (Jake Robertson), German (Richard Ringer), a Frenchman (Morhad Amdouni), a Bahraini (Hassan Chani), and American (Shadrack Kipchirchir).
(we get it their aren't many 10ks, but letting athletes who may not be fit run is always iffy).
If everyone runs that is 19 runners. The goal field size was 27. Presumably a few more will qualify on time. There also is a provision to allow area champions to run (European and NACAC for example) so that would mean Lopez Lomong could get a bid but "the entry will be subject to the approval of the Technical Delegates, based on the athlete’s level."
Our quick take is instead of going off a Championship from a year ago, the IAAF should fill the fields either off of World Rankings or this years descending order list.
