Well they better care, because zero drop only works long term for a slim segment of the population. You can get that type of toebox with a more sane stack height in the Topos, and they look much better to boot.

Seriously though, if I didn’t like em, I wouldn’t run in them. I’ve had healthier years of training/racing in my late 30’s after running in Altras than most my previous post-collegiate years. I can’t say it’s just the shoes, but it did solve some chronic stuff that made running less fun. I’ve only had positive results with Altras.

I had an Altra card stashed for months after a race...forgot about it but it had no expiration.
Similarly, I used it to get clothing instead of shoes -- also said it went through and nothing ever arrived!
I totally forgot about it until you brought it up!
Yeah add me to that list. Had an Altra gift card and decided I wanted to try the Escalante because I'd heard good things. Ordered a pair and it took at least a month for it to arrive, and when it did, the box was empty. I called customer support and they didn't believe me, and said they had no records of my order, so I forwarded them my confirmation emails, and they finally conceded and said they would send another pair. So much time went by, and no new shoes, that I had almost given up. Then finally two months later I get a package from Altra, I open it up, and it's a box full of human feces and a note card telling me to "eat they ass". I'll never deal with that company ever again.

I'm not sure about the Altria, it looks designed for someone whose foot is shaped in the form of a isocoles triangle, that and among the general public the brand recognition is slight which in turn makes me look cheap like the poor kid who has to wear Payless shoes to school. I once tried a pair on at the store and took a quick "practice jog" and found that they slipped in the heel a bit which I did not like, I mentioned this to the salesperson who suggested I try lacing my shoes in a convoluted way and I looked at him like he was retarded. Someone told me Nordstrom had decent running shoes so I ended checking it out, one of there expert fitters was really patient and attentive to my unique footwear needs, I ended up in a brand I wasn't familiar with called Sperrys, they are really comfortable and come with optional shoelaces, that's right, you don't even have to lace them up! I expressed concern about how people will perceive me in this shoe and the expert fitter reassured me that these were the "next new hot thing"
they're not the worst shoe i've ever tried but they probably would be if i were stupid enough to try them.
When I see someone running in shoes that aren't Altra, I instinctively judge them. I can't help it. They are like lost sheep, I can't help but feel sorry for them.

I used to have bunion problems. I also wasn't fat. I started wearing shoes meant for human feet and now I have no toe pain and my feet have actually straightened out a bit. Even if your toes aren't crowding each other, the bunions can develop from the toes being pushed inward by your shoes. I was a Brooks and ASICS person and thought barefoot stuff looked weird. I just got tired of being in pain. I'm a crappy runner. I don't need to make it any harder on myself.

I see the post is 5 years old. So Altras in 2019 weren't something beautiful for sure, but same goes for all other shoes at the time. If people mean they look ugly because of the wide toebox I can tell you that the you can only see the full width and shape of the toebox if you look at it from right above the shoe - any other angle and it just look like any other shoe. To me the argument that they are ugly is kinda pointless.
