Wow: Carrie Tollefson just said that Des Linden told her she made more than $1 million last year

People should be alarmed that's all she made for being one of the very very top few American women, probably only Shalane made more from NYC?

Shame this isn't updated anymore and doesn't include appearance fees but that's only twice her long lifetime of running prize money:

I have met her as well. She was a great college and pro runner and I know of her camps and Youtube videos. This does not make her a competent marathon commentator.

How much money do you think this years Boston Marathon winner will make over the next 12 months? And she is better than Des and ran a far superior race on the same course without the help of a fluke year.

I would love to hear the Hanson brothers take on Des skipping the trials.

You bet it pays to be America. Why shouldn’t it? It is America that pays for the Boston marathon.

American race, American support from a great American city, primarily American audience, American consumers, American and international advertisers marketing to the people who race/participate/volunteer/watch with disposable income to buy their products.

I hope she did make that much and more. I hope other professional runners can make that much and more. And, I hope the lions share of the sponsorship monies from American companies and American races goes to the American athletes.

A different race, in a different country should provide additional incentive for their national athletes.

There are no flukes in life. Have a positive attitude, strong work ethic, develop ones talents, show up, perform, and it could be your day.

Her NYC appearance fee is a fair question. What hurts Des in that respect is that she wasn't as famous or marketable prior to her win compared to others. My point being if Shalane or Jordan won Boston, their NYC appearance fee would likely approach 250k.

Fair or not the strong blonde "beautiful" woman with a Nike campaign behind her will garner a lot more money than Des could. And they were far more recognizable to the average American than Des and probably still are.

I pointed out that I didn't include additional appearances or speaking fees because that's hard to judge. As far as other endorsements, she likely gained a few more from this, but its limited based on her contract with Brooks and her own businesses.

The blond effect is real I agree with that. There is also though the factor of "not blond" or "non-threating" look that makes some women more relatable to other women. I think there are other athletes that have used this appeal to build their fan base and increase their marketability to some who may be tired of America's obsession with a certain look.

Absolutely she appeals to a certain demographic. But is that demographic as large as the one that is more drawn to a Shalane type? And if it is, do advertiser and sponsors and NYRR recognize the appeal and draw Desi has.

I also would say the more I think about it, the power of Nike would have been huge. I could picture massive campaigns centered around a Shalane or Jordan win. commercials, posters blown up in hundreds of Nike stores across the US. Internet campaigns etc. Molly Huddle would have suffered from this as well with Saucony had she been the one to win.

I may look like I am ragging on Desi but I have actually been a huge fan of hers for a long time. I always admired her training method and workmanlike style. I also really respected her racing technique. But I do think that she would have made less money off of this due to her style and attitude than other runners.

What happened to fighting for equality and equal pay? Doesn't seem fair to Desi.

I'd guess that all of her endorsement deals have major bonuses for winning any of "X" major marathons (list included in the contract, of course) and the issuers of the contracts never thought they would be paying. Seriously, wouldn't you offer her crazy money to WIN a race like Boston? And then they include a sliding scale down by place.

I know, that's all obvious. But if you signed her to a shoe contract that pays $100k or something like that, would you offer her 3x that to actually WIN Boston? I would. Then I'd be shocked as $hit when she wins it.

It would be like including a huge bonus into the football coach's contract to win the national championship... at the University of Toledo.
