So what this comes down to is not her goal (which is perfectly rational), but her decision to announce it publicly. I frankly think that the criticism here mostly comes down to sexism. Male athletes are adored because of their audacious trash talk, but when a female athlete simply announces her goals, people say she needs to learn her place.

Gwen could beat Florence Kiplagat due to DNF (she DNF 2017 and hasn't raced in 2018).
Gwen will be battling Laura Thweatt who's coming back from injury but ran 70:11 in July for 5th place.
I think that Vipam and Old SMTC are right on. Her 15:15 5K and subsequent races indicate she is fully capable of getting to the 2:25 range, and Shumacher has shown he knows how to train female marathoners. If conditions are decent I predict she goes out 1:12-1:13ish and comes back to finish somewhere between 2:24 low and 2:25 high.

yup, I agree with this. I'd say sub 2:30 is 'fine' for where she's at.
I agree with most here: anytihng under 2:28 would be a big win if she negative splits the race. She'll gain such confidence over that, say running 1:14 and 1:13 as opposed to going out in 1:12 and struggling home. A 2:28 in her first serious year of marathon training would put her in the conversation of being able to pull a surprise run at the trials.
All this bull about people wanting her to fail because, gasp!, she has the nerve to market herself, is by runners who are like cancer: they're part of this body of athletes but they turn and attack anyone and anything different from themselves. They're the reason we never grow, never change, never advance.

Unless the weather is perfect I think she's gonna have a really hard time getting significantly under 230.
I think she has the talent to run low 2:20... I just think it's a huge jump with not much buildup.
She is a phenomenal talent so I hope this doesn't discourage her if she runs slow. Again I hope I'm totally wrong and she runs to 2:23.
Chicago is just going to be a training race to make sure she has a Olympic qualification time under her belt. Do not expect anything more than a 2:30 at this point.

I think she'll run between 2:24-2:29, depending how the day goes. This is practice and the time and place ultimately don't matter much.
I don't really like the attention-seeking media presence (and I think her stated goal of gold in the marathon is disrespectful to people who know the sport) but I wish the Africans in particular had more of one.
Seriously, it may cost her several minutes at the end of the race.

This isn't about trash talk, though. She simply stated her goals and people find them very unlikely due to her newness in the sport and past performances. If [insert new male runner to the sport] said they wanted to go out and run a 2:04 for their first marathon, they would similarly get crucified.
