HRE is someone whose opinion on the history of running is quite respected around here. This thread can attest of that:

Ron wrote a bit about his dietary practices in "The Unforgiving Minute" and Kenny Moore did too in a Sports Illustrated article. And Ron told me what his doctor told him about his heart trouble. What do you know that contradicts any of that?

Again, since you purport to know that information first hand, you should know about Clarke's terrible diet.

And you should know well that he was not training as well in 1968 as he did the previous 2 years.

Also you should know that he didn't race as much in his build up to Mexico City, and he did even worse in 1969.

His racing results followed a definite trend, definitely NOT related to altitude.

By the way I've also spoken to Clarke, have quotes from him about his diet, and I have his complete racing schedule.

He told me that in last year or so he needed to use canes at the start of his runs until his legs loosened up. So what was the quote about his diet?

Would it be fair to say that Clarke never ran easy days? That his morning run was easier? So we have 5 x 16 to 20k tempo runs, race Saturday, 2 hours Sunday over hills averaging 5 minute miles as a regular week? Only running faster than 5k race pace in 800 and 1500m races and sprints in the long run?

Didn't he run a 2 mile world record and a 27 .49 in the 10000m in 1968 ?

I don't work in cardiac but am not thinking mitral valve disfunction and diet are typically related. His brother Jack had similar issues. Jack was an age group triathlon champ in his 60s even though he had a pacemaker.

Ron raced very frequently during the Aussie summer. He often did a track session of windsprints during the week. The Caulfield runs were not all hard threshold runs. Often they were just at a good strong steady pace and sometimes fairly easy if he was tired from racing. The Ferny Creek long runs were often fartlek like sessions on the hilly forest trails.

One person has said "his diet was crap" and one person disagrees. Nowhere was there any description of this diet, either "crap" or "not crap". An observer can't even rule out the possibility that you agree on what the man actually ate, but have different opinions about it!

He spoke about it in Ron Clarke Talks Track and elsewhere.

This information is easy to find, for anyone who is interested in the truth.

That people purport to know Clarke well and yet don't know this is ridiculous.

But then he'd probably deny it himself. After all, it's easier to blame something else, like Mexico City.
