I ran a race yesterday and she was there. I saw her at the post race festivities. For the heck of it, I looked up her time and pics, a buck 33 something for the half, but the race pics are great bc they are nothing like the instagram pics. Maybe thats why she ran so slow- She ran by a photographer, and then reversed and ran by the same photographer to get a better pic.
Recently I got second place at my local "fun run." I talked to and added a few hobby joggers.
One middle-aged hobby jogger tagged a photo of me and made some annoying comments.
- "You don't look like you're having fun at this fun run!" (I was pushing the pace and looked like I was in a bit of pain ... like how all runners do at school XC meets.)
- "What are you doing with your hands? You look like you're playing air guitar" (I was trying to maintain my balance at a sharp corner because of the slippery roads after the recent rains.)
- "Wow that's a funny looking blue jersey"
- "Your hair is flying all over the place!"
Then it dawned on me that these hobby joggers don't gave a darn about the times or the results. They really only care about how you look on camera.
In XC meets, the guy who finishes in front but looks like a total mess gets all the respect. The photogenic last place finisher is ignored. It's the total opposite at hobby jogger fun runs.

They're actually much more self-obsessed than you give them credit for. Not only are they trying to be the best looking, but they also aim to avoid finishing dead last, which doesn't look good. It's like high school all over again.
So why do you follow such people if you don't like their posts? Just ignore, no one makes you watch their feeds. At least such posts get lots of likes. Of course, if anyone wants so many they can order them on https://socialfollowers.me/services/instagram-services/buy-instagram-likes/ or just make pictures as you described.

I came across some guy from Toronto, he's a sub elite mid-d runner, 1:51/3:50 but this guy is such an attention seeker on IG, he wears a Team Canada singlet/Jacket even though he never made a national team and he has a tattoo of the Olympic rings...

Agreed Agreed Agreed! And the majority show them freshly showered, no sweat, the women have make-up on..... etc. WTF? Run a 20 miler and take a selfie at your last step. Let's see how gracious you look then LOL

Honestly I struggle with validation and whatnot but I realize how stupid it is.

And having talked to social media pros a lot of being good on social media depends on luck, timing and things outside of your control.
Salty is a good blogger.
A 1:25 half and 3:15 full is solid and a BQ for a veteran woman.
I think that Instagram runners make the sport more appealing to the average person. I feel like most people would be more intimidated by the more serious athletes than inspired/motivated. Even if it’s a bunch of crap to the more competitive runners, they still bring some kind of attention to the sport.
And like most said already, you can just unfollow them.
I don't understand why people follow people they don't know. If you don't know them, why do you care what they are up to on a daily basis?
I follow 60 people, and I know all of them.
It's not the IG runner's fault.
It's YOU and the thousands of followers fueling their ego to post this ridiculousness!
